Chapter 13 - Rebuilding From the Ashes

Three months passed. The Vance Enterprises logo was rebranded, stripping away the ostentatious crest that Eleanor had insisted upon for decades. Julian took over as CEO, implementing family-friendly policies, corporate transparency, and divesting from aggressive predatory real estate.

Amy refused to move back into the Vance family manor. Instead, she and Julian purchased a modest, sunlight-filled craftsman home in the quiet suburbs, surrounded by oak trees and green lawns.

Leo was crawling now, laughing happily as he chased their newly adopted golden retriever across the living room rug. Amy watched him from the open kitchen, rolling out dough for fresh dinner rolls, feeling a deep, profound peace she had never known during her time at the manor.

Julian came home early, slipping his arms around Amy’s waist from behind and kissing her cheek. ""How is the little boss doing today?""

""Full of energy,"" Amy smiled, leaning back against his chest. ""Dr. Keller says his lungs and throat show zero lasting effects from that night. He is entirely healthy.""

Julian rested his chin on her shoulder, watching Leo giggle as the dog licked his foot. ""I talked to the lawyers today. The criminal court accepted Eleanor’s plea bargain. Two years of probation, massive community service, and a permanent restraining order protecting you and Leo.""

""Do you miss her?"" Amy asked gently, turning around in his arms.

Julian shook his head honestly. ""I miss the mother I wished she was. But the woman who stood there while you cried... she is a stranger.""

Their doorbell rang, interrupting the quiet evening.
