Julian stood up slowly, positioning himself between the officers and Amy. The exhaustion vanished from his posture, replaced by venomous fury.
""My son is currently being treated for life-threatening hyperthermia in pediatric trauma,"" Julian said coldly. ""And you are here serving my mother's petty vendetta?""
Harrison Cole adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and stepped forward, opening a leather dossier. ""Julian, Mrs. Vance owns the vehicle you took from the estate garage. More importantly, she has filed an emergency protective custody order on behalf of the family foundation, citing maternal neglect.""
Amy sprang up from her chair, her maternal instinct overpowering her shock. ""Neglect? She forced me to wait on her guests! She wouldn't let me leave!""
""According to the signed affidavits of eight distinguished dinner guests,"" Harrison replied smoothly, ""Mrs. Amy Vance insisted on carrying the child during dinner despite being offered nursery care, directly contributing to the infant’s critical condition.""
Julian lunged forward, grabbing Cole by his tailored lapels. The two police officers immediately moved to restrain him, pulling his arms behind his back.
""Julian, don't!"" Amy cried out, grabbing his arm.
""Look at me, Cole,"" Julian hissed, breathing hard against the officer’s grip. ""Tell my mother that if she uses our child as a pawn in her social games, I will tear her life apart.""
