Chapter 1 - The Midnight Escape

The heavy mahogany front door slammed shut behind Adrian and Clara, cutting off the venomous shrills echoing from the parlor. Victoria’s voice had always carried a sharp, aristocratic bite, but tonight it sounded like grating iron. Adrian held Clara tight against his side. Beneath the delicate silk of her champagne robe, her slender frame shook uncontrollably. At seven months pregnant, kneeling on that cold floor had locked her back and swollen her ankles.
Adrian led her down the driveway toward his weathered truck, his polished Marine Dress Blues stiff against the night wind. ""Breathe, sweetheart. I’ve got you,"" he whispered, his voice low and steady despite the storm churning inside his chest. He gently helped her into the passenger seat, adjusting the belt so it wouldn't press against her rounded belly.
Clara wiped her wet cheeks, her breathing ragged. ""Adrian... your mother... she took my phone. She took my purse before you walked in. She said I had no right to own anything bought with family money.""
Adrian froze, his hand resting on the truck’s ignition. He remembered his younger brother Julian smirking in the corner, holding his phone up like a spectator at a gladiator match. Anger flared behind Adrian's eyes, hot and lethal. But Clara needed warmth, safety, and medical attention far more than his family deserved a beating.
He started the engine. The headlights cut through the gloom of the gated estate that had suffocated Clara for the six months he was deployed overseas. He drove straight to a modest motel five miles outside the county line. After carrying Clara inside and wrapping her in a coarse blanket, he inspected her swollen ankles. Red, angry marks ringed her knees from the coarse carpet fibers.
""Why didn't you write me about this?"" Adrian asked, his voice cracking as he knelt before her, gently rubbing her aching calves. ""You said in your letters everything was peaceful.""

""Victoria censored my mail, Adrian,"" Clara sobbed, hiding her face in her hands. ""She said if I complained, she’d have her contacts in the military declare you mentally unfit and strip your pension. I was so scared for you.""
Adrian’s jaw tightened until the bone showed white beneath the skin. His mother was not just cruel; she was calculating. Before he could comfort Clara further, a loud, metallic rap echoed against the motel room door.
