Chapter 3 - The Broken Seal

The flashing blue and red reflections painted the motel curtains in frantic strobes. Adrian didn't hesitate. He grabbed Clara’s hand, slipping the cash and burner phone into his pocket while Marcus moved toward the back window.
""Fire escape leads down to a drainage ditch behind the motel,"" Marcus instructed under his breath. ""Take my sedan out back; the plates are clean. Leave your truck here. They’ll track your tags within fifteen minutes.""
""What about you?"" Adrian asked, tossing the truck keys to his mentor.
""I’ll tell the deputies I borrowed your truck and haven't seen you since dusk. Go!""
Adrian helped Clara through the low window frame, supporting her weight as they descended the metal steps into the damp darkness. The sirens screeched to a halt in the front lot, followed by slamming car doors and shouting officers. Keeping low along the weed-choked embankment, Adrian guided Clara to Marcus’s unassuming black sedan parked beneath a weeping willow.
They slipped inside just as flashlights illuminated the motel room they had abandoned. Adrian started the ignition with a smooth hum, eased off the brake, and melted into the county bypass without headlights until they cleared the perimeter.
Beside him, Clara held the manila envelope against her lap. Her hands trembled as she pulled the brass clasp open. Inside, beneath the neat stacks of currency, was a smaller, leather-bound notebook embossed with a naval anchor—the personal journal of Adrian’s late father, Captain Thomas Vance.
""Adrian,"" Clara breathed, turning on the faint overhead map light. ""Your father... he didn't die of a sudden heart attack on the base.""
Adrian gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles whitening. ""What are you talking about? He collapsed in his study when I was eighteen.""

Clara read the frantic, handwritten lines on the final yellowed page, her voice shaking with horror. ""If Victoria discovers the trust fund I established in Adrian’s name, she will stop at nothing. She has already forged my medical signatures. If I do not survive the upcoming surgery, know that my estate belongs solely to my eldest son... and the bank in Dover holds the original vault key.""
Adrian felt the blood drain from his face. The very estate his mother claimed belonged exclusively to her and Julian had never been hers to give. But before he could process the truth, the burner phone on the dashboard buzzed violently with an incoming video call.
