Chapter 5 - Labor Against Time

""Adrian..."" Clara's voice was barely a whisper, thin and strained with agony. She clutched her lower abdomen, her face slick with cold sweat under the dashboard's green glow. ""Something's wrong. The pain... it isn't stopping.""
Adrian glanced over, his military composure cracking for a split second before emergency training took over. He reached out, gently pressing his fingers against her wrist. Her pulse was racing, thready and erratic. The stress, the humiliation, the physical strain of kneeling, and the frantic escape had triggered premature contractions.
""Hold on, Clara. Look at me,"" he commanded softly, catching her tearful gaze. ""Focus on my breathing. Deep breath in through your nose, out through your mouth. We're fifteen miles from Saint Jude’s Memorial.""
""We can't go there,"" Clara groaned, biting her lip so hard a bead of blood welled up. ""Your mother sits on the hospital’s board of trustees. The moment my name enters their triage system, she’ll know where we are.""
Adrian slammed his hand against the steering wheel in frustration. She was right. Victoria had spent thirty years embedding herself into the county’s elite circles; going to Saint Jude’s was walking straight into a cage. He racked his brain, scanning the dark highway markers flashing past.
Suddenly, an old exit sign appeared through the rain: Clover Creek Community Clinic - 4 Miles.
It was an underfunded, semi-rural clinic run by volunteer practitioners and retired physicians—far outside the jurisdiction of county politics. Adrian swung the wheel sharply, tires squealing as the sedan veered onto the narrow exit ramp.
Within ten minutes, he pulled into the dimly lit gravel lot of the clinic. The building was dark except for a single amber light glowing in the side intake office. Adrian scooped Clara out of the passenger seat into his arms, kicking the glass door open with his combat boot.
""Help!"" he bellowed, his parade-ground voice shaking the small clinic walls. ""I need an obstetrician now!""
An elderly nurse with silver spectacles rushed from behind the desk, followed by an exhausted doctor in faded green scrubs. The doctor took one look at Clara’s pale face and the Marine uniform covered in dust and mud.

""Exam Room One, immediately!"" the doctor ordered. As they laid Clara onto the gurney, the nurse attached a fetal monitor. The device let out a high, irregular beep that made Adrian’s stomach drop into an abyss.
""Her blood pressure is dangerously high, and the fetal heart rate is decelerating,"" the doctor said grimly, looking directly at Adrian. ""Sergeant, your wife has severe preeclampsia. If we don't stabilize her in the next hour, we will lose both of them.""
