Chapter 7 - Sanctuary Behind Steel

Adrian pocketed the phone, his eyes meeting Dr. Harrison’s. The doctor didn't need to ask; he had seen the flashing lights of local cruisers patrolling the outer highway minutes earlier.
""They're coming here,"" Adrian said, rising immediately to his feet.
Dr. Harrison shook his head calmly. ""Not into my patient rooms, they aren't. Saint Jude's may bow to the Vance family name, but this is a private charitable facility. However, they will cause a scene that Clara cannot survive right now."" The old doctor moved to a heavy steel door at the back of the hallway, unlocking it with a brass key. ""This leads to the attached parish house behind the chapel. It’s private church property. No county warrant will pierce it without twenty-four hours of legal review.""
Adrian quickly unhooked the portable saline bag and lifted Clara gently into his arms. She whimpered softly in her sleep, burying her face into the curve of his neck. With swift, silent steps, Adrian followed Dr. Harrison down the dark corridor, through the heavy reinforced door, and into a modest, wood-paneled room furnished with a clean bed, thick quilts, and a small cast-iron stove.
""Rest here,"" Dr. Harrison whispered. ""I will handle the deputies out front. If they want entry, they’ll have to arrest an eighty-year-old physician on camera.""
Adrian laid Clara down, tucking the blankets securely around her shoulders. Her breathing had finally grown even, the feverish pallor on her cheeks replaced by a faint, healthy pink.
Adrian stepped back into the shadows of the room, pulled out the burner phone, and dialed the number on Kenneth Sterling’s business card. It was five in the morning, but the line clicked open after just two rings.
""Sterling,"" a sharp, gravelly voice answered without a hint of sleepiness.
""Mr. Sterling. This is Adrian Vance. Thomas Vance’s son.""
A long, heavy pause hung over the line, followed by the sound of a lighter flicking and paper rustling. ""I’ve waited seven years for this call, Adrian,"" the attorney replied, his voice hardening into pure steel. ""Your father left a safe deposit box in Dover. Inside is the original irrevocable trust, along with video testimony recorded three days before he died. Did you know your mother only had life tenancy on the estate—contingent on her never bringing harm to your lineage?""
Adrian’s eyes narrowed into cold flint. ""Harm to my lineage?""
""If she ever threatened your wife or your unborn child, her claim to every brick, every dollar, and every title is voided instantly. But we have to file the original documents before the probate board meets at noon today.""

""I'll be there,"" Adrian said. ""Send me the coordinates.""
""One problem, Sergeant,"" Sterling warned. ""Victoria just hired private security to lock down the Dover courthouse.""
