Chapter 13 - Shadows on the Blacktop

The evening mist hung thick over the winding curves of Route 9, swirling in the headlights of Adrian’s newly leased SUV. In the passenger seat, Clara slept peacefully, bundled in a soft wool blanket with a small orthopedic pillow tucked behind her lower back. The fetal monitor readings had shown steady improvement all afternoon; Dr. Harrison had cleared her for transport back to a quiet, private recovery suite in Dover under Kenneth Sterling’s direct supervision.
Adrian kept one hand on the steering wheel and the other resting gently over Clara’s fingers. The relief of knowing his father’s legacy was secured brought a quiet calm, but his combat instincts remained razor-sharp.
In his rearview mirror, two miles past the county junction, a pair of dull amber headlights appeared. The vehicle behind them maintained an unusual distance—never closing in to pass, never dropping back when Adrian accelerated.
Adrian glanced at his dashboard display. No other vehicles were registered on the road for five miles in either direction. The road ahead twisted through Blackwood Gorge, a treacherous three-mile stretch framed by sheer stone cliffs on the left and a steep, unfenced drop into the river on the right.
""Clara,"" Adrian said quietly, keeping his voice gentle so as not to startle her. ""Wake up, sweetheart. Fasten your shoulder strap tight.""
Clara opened her eyes groggily, blinking against the dashboard light. ""Adrian? Are we home?""
""Not yet,"" Adrian replied, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
Suddenly, the vehicle behind them cut its high beams on, blazing blinding white light into the SUV’s cabin. The heavy roar of a modified diesel engine tore through the quiet night air. A lifted black pickup truck, reinforced with a heavy steel push bumper, surged forward at terrifying speed.

""Hold on!"" Adrian roared, gripping the wheel with both hands.
The truck rammed their rear bumper with a deafening crash of crumpling metal. Clara screamed as the impact jolted them forward, the SUV’s stability control screeching as tires fought for traction against the wet asphalt. The black truck pulled alongside them, aiming its steel front quarter-panel directly at Adrian's driver side, preparing to force them off the edge of the cliff.
