Chapter 8 - The Dover Checkpoint

The morning sun broke through a bank of gray clouds, casting a dull bronze light over the downtown streets of Dover. Outside the county probate courthouse, three black SUVs were parked conspicuously along the curb, their tinted windows hiding private security contractors dressed in sharp gray suits.
Victoria Vance stood on the wide stone steps of the courthouse, draped in an immaculate wool coat, holding a leather designer handbag. Beside her stood Julian, nervously checking his smartphone as reporters from local news outlets began setting up cameras at the foot of the stairs. Victoria had summoned the press herself, preparing to deliver a tearful public statement about her ""troubled veteran son"" and his ""exploited young wife.""
""Are you sure the deputies lost them at the clinic?"" Victoria asked coldly without turning her head toward Julian.
""The old doctor threatened to file civil rights violations if they searched the parish house,"" Julian muttered, fidgeting with his collar. ""Mom, maybe we should back off. What if Adrian actually found Dad's old papers?""
""Your father was weak,"" Victoria snapped, her voice like cracking ice. ""He thought he could leave everything to that ungrateful boy just because he wore a uniform. I spent thirty years building this family's social standing. I will not let a penniless waitress like Clara inherit the Vance empire.""
Down the street, an old milk delivery van clattered past the police barricade and parked in the loading dock behind the municipal library adjacent to the courthouse. The rear doors swung open, and Adrian stepped onto the asphalt.
He had changed out of his dress uniform into dark jeans and a plain black jacket to avoid immediate attention. Behind him stepped Marcus, holding a heavy leather briefcase chained to his left wrist.
""Sterling is waiting inside the basement records vault,"" Marcus said, scanning the perimeter with trained military vigilance. ""Victoria has private guards on the front doors and the public elevators. They aren't law enforcement; they can't legally detain you, but they can stall you until the noon filing deadline passes.""
Adrian checked his watch. It was 11:15 AM.
""Let them try,"" Adrian said calmly. ""Marcus, take the fire stairwell on the east wing. I’ll draw their attention through the main atrium.""

""Adrian,"" Marcus cautioned, gripping his shoulder. ""Keep your temper. If you throw a punch, they’ll arrest you on the spot.""
Adrian offered a grim, humorless smile. ""I don't need to throw a punch, Sergeant. Truth hits harder than any fist.""
