Chapter 1 - The Glass Shatters

The silence that blanketed the opulent ballroom was suffocating. Moments ago, crystal flutes had clinked in celebration, and orchestral strings had played a sweet, romantic melody. Now, the music faltered into an agonizing halt. Liam, still grasping the stem of his champagne flute, tightened his grip until his knuckles blanched. The fine crystal fractured under the sudden, violent tension, sending a sharp crack echoing through the grand hall. A thin bead of crimson welled on his thumb, but he barely felt the sting. His entire universe had narrowed down to the little girl shivering under Clara’s arm.

Clara stood tall near the banquet table, her floor-length gold gown shimmering beneath the chandelier light like armor. Her expression was completely devoid of the polite socialite warmth she usually wore. In her arms, two-year-old Maisie buried her tear-streaked face deep into the sequined fabric, her small hands still clutching the half-eaten vanilla cupcake. The pale frosting had smeared across the front of Clara’s pristine designer gown, yet Clara did not care in the slightest. Her gaze was locked on Vanessa, sharp, unforgiving, and piercing straight through the bridal illusion.

Vanessa’s lips parted, but no coherent words formed. Her face, framed by an immaculate bridal updo, turned an ashen white beneath layers of contour and blush. The lace of her plunging neckline fluttered with her shallow, rapid breathing. ""Liam, please... it’s not what it sounds like,"" she stammered, stepping toward him, her diamond tennis bracelet catching the glaring light. ""She was crying before the grand entrance. She was ruining her dress, making a scene... the photographers were waiting! I just told her to sit quietly until the speeches were over!""

Liam stared at his bride as if looking at a stranger wearing a dead woman's face. Maisie had been terrified of dark, enclosed spaces ever since the car crash that took her biological mother eighteen months ago. Vanessa knew that better than anyone; she had sat by Maisie’s bed while Liam read bedtime stories to chase away the nightmares. Yet she had deliberately shoved a terrified toddler under a floor-length tablecloth in the dark corner of a roaring ballroom just to preserve a pristine photo album.

A low murmur rippled through the two hundred guests. High-society friends, corporate partners, and family members exchanged horrified whispers behind gilded menus. Liam didn't look at any of them. He stepped down from the elevated head table, the hem of his tuxedo brushing against the fallen rose petals. He ignored Vanessa completely, walking straight past her outstretched hand. He knelt before Clara, extending his uninjured hand toward his daughter. ""Maisie, baby,"" Liam whispered, his voice cracking beneath a tidal wave of grief and fury.

Maisie peeked over Clara’s shoulder, her big doe eyes wet with tears. ""Daddy,"" she whimpered softly, reaching out her tiny fingers. But before Liam could pull her into his chest, Clara stepped back slightly, her eyes flickering toward the back entrance of the ballroom. Two unfamiliar men in dark suits had just entered through the side doors, their badges flashing briefly under their suit jackets.
