Chapter 4 - The Secret Lens

Liam walked over to the detective, each step feeling like walking through wet cement. Clara followed, keeping Maisie turned away from the glowing screen. The detective pressed play on a muted video file. The timestamp in the corner showed three weeks ago, captured from a discreet nanny-cam hidden inside the lake house living room—a camera Liam had never known existed.

On the screen, Maisie was sitting on the hardwood floor, playing with wooden blocks. Vanessa entered the frame, dressed in loungewear, holding a glass of red wine. Maisie accidentally knocked over a tower of blocks, sending one skittering across the floor and lightly tapping Vanessa’s bare ankle. What happened next made Liam’s stomach violently heave. Vanessa didn't just scold the toddler. She set her wine down with deliberate slowness, gripped Maisie’s tiny arm with brutal force, dragged her into the dark utility closet beneath the stairs, and slammed the door shut, locking it from the outside. The camera caught Maisie’s frantic little palms beating against the wood for twenty agonized minutes while Vanessa calmly scrolled on her phone.

""She told me Maisie tripped on the dock,"" Liam whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely articulate the syllables. A blinding, deafening rage rushed into his ears, buzzing like high-voltage electricity. ""She told me the bruise on her shoulder was from falling against the wooden railing.""

Vanessa was sitting on the floor by the abandoned head table, surrounded by her ruined train, sobbing hysterically into her hands. ""She wouldn't stop screaming, Liam! She is so needy, so broken! You never gave me your full attention! It was always Maisie, Maisie, Maisie! I had to teach her boundaries!""

""She's two years old!"" Liam roared, losing control for the first time. The sound was guttural, the cry of a wounded animal defending its cub. He took two aggressive steps toward Vanessa, but Clara placed a firm, calm hand on his forearm.

""Don't,"" Clara said softly, her voice steadying him like an anchor in a hurricane. ""Don't give her the satisfaction of seeing you lose yourself. She is already finished."" Clara turned to the officers. ""Take her.""

The officer stepped forward, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. Vanessa screamed and kicked, her pristine tulle ripping as she struggled against the restraint, but she was hauled to her feet and escorted out through the grand double doors. Just as the doors swung shut, Liam's phone in his tuxedo pocket buzzed violently. It was an urgent automated notification from his bank: his company’s primary operating account had just been drained of four million dollars.
