Chapter 15 - A True Sanctuary

Three months later, the morning sunlight poured warmly into the high-ceilinged kitchen of Liam’s new home—a quiet, sun-drenched countryside estate miles away from the superficial chaos of the city. The garden outside was blooming with vibrant wildflowers, and the gentle chirping of birds filled the fresh air.
Maisie sat in her wooden highchair, giggling uncontrollably as she smeared strawberry jam across a pancake. The faint bruises were long gone, replaced by healthy, rosy cheeks and bright, sparkling hazel eyes. Her laughter was loud, joyful, and completely free of fear.
""More berries, please!"" Maisie demanded, clapping her small hands together.
""Coming right up, little princess,"" Liam smiled, placing a fresh bowl of sliced strawberries on her tray. He kissed the top of her head, breathing in the sweet, clean scent of baby shampoo. Clara laughed, walking straight over to kiss Maisie’s cheek, completely unbothered by the strawberry jam. ""Good morning, sweet girl."" She then looked up at Liam, their eyes meeting in a quiet, unspoken understanding that had grown stronger every single day since that fateful night at the altar.

He had once looked for a mother for Maisie in all the wrong places, blinded by grief and social expectations. But as he watched Clara gently wipe Maisie’s chin with a napkin, he knew that the true protector, the true heart of their family, had been right beside them all along.
Suddenly, a loud knock rattled the heavy front door. Clara and Liam both froze, glancing at the entryway as a shadow loomed through the frosted glass."
