Chapter 6 - A Cold Sanctuary

The line went dead with a sharp click. The silence that followed was suffocating. Liam dropped his hands to his sides, his breath coming in shallow, jagged gasps. The opulent venue, decorated with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of white orchids and crystal chandeliers, now felt like a gilded tomb. He had nearly tied his life—and his innocent daughter's life—to a criminal syndicate through marriage.
""We can't go to your house,"" Clara said immediately, breaking the terrifying quiet. Her practical instincts took over instantly. ""Whoever that was, they know where you live. They probably have eyes on your penthouse right now. If Vanessa’s family is tangled with loan sharks or illegal financiers, your home is compromised.""
Liam nodded slowly, trying to shake the fog from his mind. ""My car is outside with the valet. They might have tracked it.""
""We take mine,"" Clara instructed, nodding toward the service exit. ""It's parked in the staff lot beneath the kitchen. Tinted windows, no corporate registry. We take Maisie, get her checked by a private doctor I trust, and disappear until my legal team and the FBI can trace that wire.""

Liam gently took Maisie into his arms. The toddler stirred, letting out a soft whimper before settling her cheek against Liam’s chest. Her small hand instinctively curled into the lapel of his tuxedo. Feeling the steady, fragile rhythm of her heartbeat against his own chest grounded Liam completely. The despair that had threatened to swallow him whole hardened into absolute, lethal resolve. He had failed to protect her mother from the reckless driver who took her life, but he would tear down the entire world before he let anyone lay a finger on his daughter.
They hurried through the labyrinthine service corridors of the hotel, stepping out into the chilly night air of the underground loading dock. Clara unlocked her sleek black SUV and opened the back door. But as Liam leaned in to secure Maisie into the safety seat, a sharp beam of headlights illuminated the garage ramp. A heavy black sedan roared down the concrete incline, tires screeching as it swerved to block their only exit.
