Chapter 12 - A Mother’s Secret

That evening, the manor returned to an uneasy quiet. Marian led Elena down into the private archives beneath the estate—a vaulted room lined with cedar chests and velvet-lined cases containing a century of family history.
Marian unlocked an antique iron chest, carefully lifting out a bundle wrapped in faded purple silk. Inside was a leather journal, its pages worn and brittle.
""This belonged to your mother,"" Marian whispered, tears welling in her soft eyes. ""Before she left, she begged me to hide this from your grandfather. I kept it safe all these years, waiting for the day I could hand it to her child.""
Elena took the journal with reverent hands. As she flipped through the pages, her mother’s elegant handwriting brought an overwhelming ache to her chest. There were sketches of flowers, daily entries about her love for Elena’s father, and then—darker notes.
Elena read the final entry, dated two weeks before Camille vanished:
'The Alliance is not about shipping. It is about human trafficking and dark money running through the northern piers. Beatrice is deep inside it, but the head of the snake is not a Vance. It is Victor Thorne.'
Elena looked up at Marian, her heart racing. ""Victor Thorne? Isn't he the city’s mayoral candidate?""
Marian gasped, clamping a hand over her mouth. ""Victor was Camille’s former fiancé... the man your grandfather tried to force her to marry.""
Suddenly, the house alarm blared through the underground chambers—a high-pitched electronic siren accompanied by the automated voice of the security system:
