Chapter 5 - The Master Key

The rain started falling over the estate grounds as police cruisers rolled up the winding driveway, red and blue lights painting the wet stone facade. Inside the private study, the estate’s lead attorney, Arthur Pendelton, was already unboxing secured metal briefcases under Julian’s cold supervision.

Elena had changed into a simple sweater and slacks provided by the staff, but she felt more out of place than ever. ""If this is true,"" she said, crossing her arms, ""why did Beatrice try to kill me the moment she realized who I was?""

""Because the trust has a sunset clause,"" Pendelton explained, adjusting his glasses with trembling fingers. ""Julian’s grandfather established that if Camille or her direct lineage did not claim the primary shares by her twenty-fifth birthday, the entirety of the liquid assets and maritime real estate would permanently transfer to Beatrice Vance.""

Julian checked his watch. ""Elena turns twenty-five in forty-eight hours.""

Elena blinked in shock. ""How do you know my birthday?""

""The private investigators never stopped searching,"" Julian said softly. ""My mother never let me close the file. Beatrice knew that. She’s been liquidating offshore holdings for months, preparing for the deadline. Tonight was supposed to be her celebration. But seeing you here ruined her timeline.""

""And the master key Marcus mentioned?"" Elena asked.

Julian’s jaw tightened. ""It doesn't open a bank vault. It opens Grandfather’s private terminal at the port terminal offices. Every shipping ledger, every off-book account, and the original will is stored there. If Beatrice wipes those drives tonight, your claim vanishes on paper.""

Marian walked over, placing a gentle hand on Elena’s cheek. ""You don't have to fight this battle, my dear. We can protect you.""

Elena looked down at her work-calloused hands. She remembered her mother coughing in a freezing basement flat, working twelve-hour shifts while Beatrice wore hundred-thousand-dollar diamonds bought with stolen blood.

""No,"" Elena said, her hazel eyes turning to cold steel. ""She threw champagne in my face. Let’s go take everything she owns.""
