Chapter 15 - The Unbroken Crown

Viktor did not let go of Elena’s hand as he turned his head toward Marcus. ""I told you we were not to be disturbed.""

Marcus kept his eyes on the floor, holding a sealed black leather envelope bearing an embossed wax seal—a double-headed wolf. The crest of the Old World Syndicate in Berlin.

""It arrived by diplomatic courier five minutes ago, Boss,"" Marcus said quietly. ""Direct from the High Council.""

Elena felt Viktor’s fingers tense, but she gently stroked the back of his hand, her touch grounding him. Viktor stood up slowly, walked to Marcus, and took the envelope. He broke the wax seal with his thumb and slid out a heavy parchment letter written in black ink.

He read it in silence, his eyes darting across the precise, aristocratic script.

Viktor Rostov,

Sofia’s failure has been noted, and her treason against your blood is recognized by the Council. The ledgers you provided have purged the rot within our financial channels. As of this hour, the High Council acknowledges your absolute sovereignty over the Eastern Seaboard.

However, a king cannot rule from behind a wall of corpses without an anchor. The traditions of the bloodline require a formal union. You will choose a bride from the allied families of the Council before the winter solstice, or your seat will be considered vacant.

Choose wisely. The dynasty must endure.

Viktor’s face remained stone-cold as he finished reading. He crumpled the heavy parchment in his fist, his tattooed knuckles turning white.

""What does it say, Viktor?"" Elena’s voice came from the bed, quiet but sharp. She had already guessed the nature of the letter from the crest.

Viktor walked back to her bed. Without a word, he tossed the crumpled letter into a metal trash basin beside the nightstand, struck a match from his pocket, and dropped it inside. The high-grade parchment caught fire instantly, the black ink curling into gray ash.

Marcus watched in stunned silence. ""Boss... that’s the High Council's directive. Defying them means—""

""The Council didn't bleed for this city,"" Viktor interrupted, his voice ringing with absolute, unyielding authority. ""They didn't bleed for my mother, and they didn't take five bullets for me.""

He turned back to Elena, taking her frail hand into both of his own. He knelt once more, looking up into her hazel eyes with an intensity that brooked no argument from man, council, or god.

""Marcus,"" Viktor commanded without breaking eye contact with Elena.

""Yes, Boss?""

""Contact the jeweler. Have the family signet ring resized to fit her finger. Tell the Cathedral of St. Nicholas to prepare for a coronation wedding next month.""

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. ""Viktor... they will declare war on you. The allied families will never accept an orphan with no name.""

Viktor raised her hand to his lips, kissing the delicate knuckle where his ring would soon sit. A dark, confident smile touched the corners of his mouth—the smile of a predator that had finally found its true mate.

""Let them bring their armies, Elena,"" Viktor whispered, his eyes gleaming like polished steel. ""You gave me back my life. Now watch me conquer the world to keep you safe.""

Elena looked into his eyes, the fear fading from her chest, replaced by an ancient, fierce certainty. She reached up with her free hand, her fingertips tracing the jagged scars on his jawline.

May you like

""Then let them come, Viktor,"" she said softly, her voice steady and resolute. ""Let them see what happens when they touch what is yours.""

Outside the hospital window, the sun rose high over the sprawling metropolis, illuminating the city that now belonged, entirely and unconditionally, to the king and his unbroken queen."
