Chapter 14 - The Dawn Walk

The rain had finally stopped by the time Viktor exited the courthouse. Dawn was breaking across the city skyline, painting the bruised purple clouds with streaks of brilliant, burning gold. The power grid had been restored, and the distant wail of police sirens signaled the beginning of the aftermath, but none dared approach the perimeter guarded by the Rostov vehicles.
Viktor climbed into the back of his SUV, stripping off the ruined tactical vest and throwing his bloody ivory jacket onto the floorboard. He closed his eyes, the bone-deep exhaustion of thirty-six hours of continuous bloodshed settling into his limbs. Yet, beneath the fatigue, a strange, unfamiliar peace was beginning to take root.
For the first time since his father had handed him a gun at sixteen, Viktor had chosen mercy over an execution—not out of weakness, but because of a woman whose heart refused to stop beating.
""Back to the hospital, Boss?"" Marcus asked from the driver’s seat, checking the rearview mirror.
""Drive,"" Viktor said.
The convoy moved through the waking city in silence. When they arrived at the hospital, the private security detail snapped to attention, saluting their king as he strode through the lobby. Viktor ignored the glances, taking the elevator directly to the intensive care unit.
He stepped through the doors of the private recovery room. The morning light poured through the clean windows, casting a warm glow across the white sheets.
His mother was sitting in an armchair beside Elena’s bed, holding the young woman’s hand, speaking to her in low, comforting tones. When Viktor entered, his mother looked up, smiled softly, and stood. She placed a gentle hand on Viktor’s scarred cheek as she passed him, nodding once before leaving the room to give them privacy.
Viktor walked slowly to the bedside.
Elena turned her head. Her face was still terribly pale, dark circles bruising the skin beneath her eyes, but her hazel gaze was clear, focused, and steady. When she saw him—standing before her without a weapon, his hands bare—her lips curved into a faint, exhausted smile.
""You look terrible,"" she whispered.
Viktor dropped to his knees beside the bed, his large, tattooed hands gently cupping hers. He pressed his forehead against the edge of the mattress, letting out a long, shuddering breath that felt like the release of a lifetime of violence.
""You're alive,"" he choked out, his voice cracking with an emotion he had spent decades burying. ""You survived.""
Elena’s fingers moved, curling weakly around his thumb. ""I told you... I wouldn't leave you alone with these wolves.""
Viktor raised his head, looking directly into her eyes. He leaned up, pressing a tender, lingering kiss to her forehead, then to her cheek, and finally lingering an inch from her lips.
May you like
""There are no more wolves in this house,"" Viktor whispered. ""From today, Elena... you rule beside me. Or we burn the kingdom down together.""
Elena smiled, her fingers tightening on his hand. But before she could answer, the door behind them clicked open, and Marcus stepped in, his expression grimmer than ever.
