Chapter 5 - Fortress Under Siege

The tires of the SUV shrieked as Viktor slammed the vehicle through the glass barricades of the hospital's private ambulance bay. The ground floor was already enveloped in white smoke, the sharp, chemical stench of CS tear gas burning through the air vents. Security personnel lay scattered across the lobby floor, groaning in pools of blood and broken glass.

Viktor didn't wait for Marcus. Armed with an abandoned assault rifle he stripped from a fallen guard, he sprinted up the emergency stairwell, skipping three steps at a time. The sound of muffled gunshots echoed down from the fourth floor—the intensive care wing.

Every breath tore at his lungs, but the thought of Elena’s fragile body being torn apart by secondary gunfire drove him beyond physical exhaustion. When he kicked open the fourth-floor fire door, he was met with the barrel of an enemy shotgun.

Viktor dropped his center of gravity, grabbed the barrel, jerked it upward as the blast took a chunk out of the ceiling tiles, and drove his combat knife straight upward under the attacker's jaw. Without pausing to watch the man fall, he advanced down the hallway, firing short, controlled bursts through the lingering haze.

The ICU doors had been blown off their hinges. Two masked gunmen were inside, their weapons trained on the bed where Elena lay, monitors beeping erratically around her. His elderly mother was huddled in the far corner, guarded by a dying Rostov soldier who had emptied his revolver and was now using his own body as a shield.

Viktor raised his rifle and fired through the reinforced observation window. The glass shattered outward, the bullets finding their marks with sickening thuds. Both intruders crumpled beside Elena’s IV poles.

Viktor crossed the threshold in two strides, his eyes frantic. ""Mother?""

The old woman looked up, her face streaked with tears and soot, but her jaw remained firm. ""I’m here, Vitya. I’m here. But Elena...""

Viktor spun toward the bed. Elena was still breathing, her chest rising and falling beneath an oxygen mask spattered with glass dust, but the IV line delivering her blood transfusion had been severed by a stray bullet. Deep red fluid pooled on the floor, mixing with the rain dripping from Viktor's clothes.

He lunged forward, his tattooed hands clamping the severed plastic line, screaming for surgeons who were hiding under desks down the hall.

Suddenly, Elena’s eyelids fluttered open. Her gaze was unfocused, swimming in morphine and shock, but she recognized the ivory suit, the tattoos on his wrists, the agony in his eyes.

Her lips moved beneath the mask. Viktor pulled it down slightly, leaning his ear against her cold lips.

""It wasn't... Alexei,"" she whispered, her voice barely a breath. ""The voice on the phone... before the shooting... it was Sofia.""

Viktor’s body seized. Sofia was his sister.
