Chapter 6 - Bloodline Fractures

The name hung in the ruined room like a poisoned blade. Sofia. Viktor’s younger sister, the woman who ran the syndicate’s legal foundations, the quiet intellectual who had always claimed she despised the violence of their father's empire. She had been the one who arranged the medical transport for their mother that very afternoon.

The ICU was rapidly secured as Marcus and thirty reinforcements flooded the floor, establishing a perimeter that turned the medical wing into an impenetrable fortress. Two surgeons, visibly shaking under the gaze of Rostov gunmen, hurried into the room to repair Elena’s severed arterial lines and restabilize her vitals.

Viktor stood by the shattered window, watching the city lights blur through the downpour. His mother walked over slowly, clutching a wounded shoulder, her weathered face lined with an unbearable sorrow.

""You heard her?"" Viktor asked, his back turned.

""I heard,"" his mother replied softly. ""Sofia always believed our father’s blood was cursed. She told me once that the only way to save this family was to burn it to the ash and scatter the seeds elsewhere.""

""She didn't just burn it,"" Viktor hissed, turning around. His ivory jacket was ruined, painted with dark splatters of blood and grime. ""She tried to butcher you. She put five bullets in the only person in this city who doesn't look at me like an executioner.""

""She wants the vault keys, Viktor,"" his mother warned, her voice trembling slightly. ""The ledger containing the identities of every politician and judge our family owns. If she hands that to the federal prosecutors, she gets immunity, and you get a wooden box or a concrete cell.""

Viktor looked over at Elena. The doctors had managed to reconnect her fluids, and her pulse was stabilizing, but her face remained the color of parchment. He walked to the bedside, gently brushing a strand of damp hair from her forehead. Her skin was freezing.

""Marcus,"" Viktor commanded without looking up.

""Sir?""

""Lock down every airstrip, every private marina, and every train station within three hundred miles. Notify our border contacts. Sofia doesn't leave the country.""

""And if she resists?"" Marcus asked cautiously, knowing the weight of the question.

Viktor leaned down, his lips brushing Elena’s temple, whispering a silent vow into the quiet room. When he straightened, his eyes were as dark and merciless as an open grave.

""Bring her to the basement of the estate. If she carries our blood, she will bleed it like anyone else.""

As Marcus turned to relay the orders, Viktor’s private phone rang on the nightstand. The caller ID displayed a single word: Sister.
