Chapter 1 - The Paper on the Marble

Eleanor Vance remained on the cold, polished floor, her manicured fingers hovering over the crisp vellum deed. For forty years, the Vance estate had stood as a fortress of high society, untouchable and insulated from the rabble. Yet the infant’s presence on the lowest stair had cracked the veneer. Clara stood above her, holding eight-month-old Leo securely against her collarbone. The boy had stopped whimpering, chewing absentmindedly on his collar, completely indifferent to the storm brewing around him. Eleanor finally forced herself to pick up the paper. The embossed golden seal caught the ambient chandelier light.
""This is an absurdity,"" Eleanor hissed, her voice trembling with venom despite the composure she tried to pull together. ""Arthur was out of his mind during his final months. He was pumped full of morphine. Any court in the state will have this thrown out before lunch.""
Clara took a step backward toward the great mahogany entrance, her jaw rigid. ""Arthur spent the last four months of his life completely sober, Eleanor. Every cognitive assessment was videotaped, every signature witnessed by three independent magistrates. He didn't leave this estate to his legitimate son, Julian, because he knew Julian was bleeding the family trusts dry to fund his offshore debts. He left it to his grandson. To Leo.""
Eleanor rose slowly, smoothing out the plum-burgundy brocade of her dress. Her pride suffered, but her instinct for survival was waking up. ""You think you can just walk in here with a bastard child and usurp forty years of tradition? Julian will tear you apart.""
""Let him try,"" Clara replied coldly. ""The probate has cleared. The locks are being re-keyed by noon. You have forty-eight hours to pack your personal belongings and vacate.""
Eleanor smiled, a sharp, bitter curve of red lips. ""Look closer at section four, my dear. You haven't read the codicil, have you?""

Clara’s heart seized. She looked down at the spare copy clutched in her hand.
""The executor,"" Eleanor whispered, stepping closer, ""is not you. And he is already waiting in the library.""
