Chapter 14 - The Safe Haven

Fifty miles away, dawn was breaking over the horizon in pale shades of lavender and cold gray. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the asphalt slick and reflective under the morning sun. Clara pulled the battered sports car into the gravel driveway of a secluded cabin tucked deep within the Adirondacks—a property Arthur had purchased under Clara's mother’s name forty years ago, long before the Vance fortune had turned toxic.

She turned off the ignition. The silence that filled the vehicle was immense, broken only by the rhythmic, soft breathing of Leo, who had finally fallen asleep in the back seat.

Clara sat still for a long time, staring at her bloodied hands on the steering wheel. Her head throbbed, her ribs ached, and her clothes were stained with mud, glass, and rain. But they were alive.

She unbuckled Leo, lifting his warm, fragile body out of the car seat and holding him against her chest. She unlocked the cabin door, stepping into the dusty, quiet living room. On the center table rested a single, untouched envelope with her name written in Arthur Vance’s unmistakable, sharp calligraphy.

Her hands trembling, she sat down on the sofa, keeping Leo curled in her lap, and slit the envelope open with her fingernail.

Inside was an authentic certificate of deposit from a private Zurich vault, completely separate from the Vance corporate accounts, accompanied by a handwritten note:

The mansion was the bait to lure them into the light so they could destroy each other. The real fortune is in your hands. But remember this: blood never washes out.

Clara turned the page. Stapled to the back was a medical record she had never seen before—a DNA test conducted nine months ago.
