Chapter 13 - Unfinished Business

Agony shot through Clara’s skull, the metallic taste of blood flooding her mouth. Marcus leaned through the broken window, his face smeared with crimson, his teeth bared in a feral grimace. The gun was gone, but his other hand held a jagged piece of broken glass.

""You really thought Arthur’s bastards would get away with it?"" Marcus snarled, wrenching her head back. ""Arthur ruined my life thirty years ago! He stole this company from me, and I took his life drop by drop! You aren't leaving this garage!""

Clara couldn't breathe, the grip on her hair paralyzing her neck. In the rearview mirror, she saw Leo screaming, his tiny fists flailing in terror.

Not my son.

With a sudden burst of primal strength, Clara jammed the gear shifter into reverse, slammed her foot onto the accelerator, and released the clutch.

The car leaped backward with violent acceleration. Marcus lost his footing, his torso dragged along the concrete as the car shot out of the bay toward the half-open door. Clara gripped the wheel with one hand and slammed her elbow into Marcus’s throat. He choked, losing his grip on her hair, and tumbled backward onto the slick oil-stained concrete just as the car cleared the bottom edge of the metal roll-up door.

The car slammed into the wet gravel driveway outside, skidding sideways across the manicured lawn.

Clara slammed on the brakes, turning the wheel hard to right the vehicle. Through the pouring rain and the swept headlights, she saw the silhouette of Jax standing on the front porch of the mansion, leaning heavily against a marble column, holding an unconscious Eleanor upright against his shoulder. Jax met Clara's gaze through the windshield and gave a single, resolute nod.

Clara slammed the pedal to the floor. The car surged forward into the dark, rain-swept forest road.
