Chapter 4 - Poison in the Cellar

The silence in the library was suffocating. Marcus reached for the leather-bound book with gloved precision, using a penknife to pry open its swollen, damp pages. Eleanor remained motionless by the doorway, her manicured fingers tightening against the silk of her scarf until her knuckles turned white.
""Julian, you are completely unhinged,"" Eleanor stated with cold authority, though her voice lacked its usual sharpness. ""You've been bingeing on narcotics again. Inventing murder plots to contest a testamentary trust is pathetic, even for you.""
""Is it?"" Julian sneered, turning on his heel to face her. ""Arthur’s private physician, Dr. Sterling, didn't sign the death certificate willingly. He told me everything yesterday afternoon after I threatened to go to the medical board about his illegal prescriptions. Arthur’s toxicology report was deliberately omitted from the coroner’s file.""
Marcus turned a water-damaged page, squinting at the faint ink. ""There's a transaction ledger here. A recurring payment of fifteen thousand dollars every month for the last two years, made out to an offshore shell entity in the Cayman Islands called Nightshade Holdings.""
Clara looked at Eleanor. ""You managed the domestic accounts. You were the only one who handled Arthur’s medication and his dietary regimen after his stroke.""
""Are you accusing me, you little gutter rat?"" Eleanor shrieked, finally breaking her composure. ""I gave that man forty years of my youth! I built his empire beside him while he treated me like an ornament! Why would I kill him when I was already named the primary beneficiary in his original will?""
""Because he changed the will six months ago,"" Marcus cut in quietly, looking up from the pages. ""And this ledger confirms it wasn't Eleanor who controlled Nightshade Holdings.""

Every eye in the room locked onto Marcus.
""The signature authorizing the fund transfers,"" Marcus whispered, looking directly at Clara, ""belongs to your maiden name.""
