Chapter 2 - The Silent Executor

Clara’s boots clicked against the Carrara marble as she pushed past the heavy oak doors of the private library. The smell of aged calfskin, pipe tobacco, and bourbon hung thick in the air. Sitting behind Arthur Vance’s towering mahogany desk was a man she had never anticipated seeing outside of a prison visitation cell: Marcus Vance, Arthur’s estranged younger brother, black sheep of the dynasty, and a disgraced corporate attorney who had vanished a decade ago.
""Clara,"" Marcus said, looking up over a pair of wire-rimmed spectacles. He wore a faded, double-breasted tweed coat that smelled of damp rain. ""You’ve grown into a fighter. Arthur always admired that. Said you were the only person in his life who never asked him for a check.""
""What are you doing here, Marcus?"" Clara demanded, adjusting Leo’s weight against her hip. ""Arthur told me you were in Europe.""
""I was. Until his lawyer served me with a court-ordered subpoena three weeks ago,"" Marcus replied, standing up. He wasn't aggressive, but his eyes carried the hollow exhaustion of a man who had survived a shipwreck. ""Arthur knew Eleanor would forge documents. He knew Julian would try to hire arsonists or buy off probate judges. So he named me as sole trustee with absolute discretion over the living quarters until the boy turns twenty-one.""
Eleanor appeared in the doorway, folding her arms over her chest, eyes gleaming with malicious satisfaction. ""Tell her the rest, Marcus. Tell her what the will mandates for her to keep the boy.""
Marcus looked down at the desk, his jaw working silently before he met Clara's gaze. ""To keep the boy as the sole beneficiary of the Vance estate, Clara... you are legally required to reside under this roof alongside Eleanor and Julian. If either party vacates without mutual written consent, the entire trust defaults to the state fosterage system, and Leo is remanded to state custody until adulthood.""
Clara felt the floor pitch beneath her feet. ""He wouldn't do that to his own grandson.""
May you like
""He didn't trust you alone, Clara,"" Eleanor purred from behind. ""He wanted to make sure you paid for every single dime. Welcome home.""
Just then, the front doors banged open with violent force, followed by the heavy, uneven footsteps of a furious Julian Vance.
