Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Ruin

The cold marble of the foyer felt like ice beneath Clara’s trembling feet. Her fingers pressed against her swollen stomach, feeling the frantic flutter of the unborn child within her. Across the grand entrance hall stood Julian, his white shirt rumpled, his body a barricade protecting Lauren. Lauren wore gold silk like armor, her lips parted in a cruel, mocking smile.
""Don't speak to Lauren like that,"" Julian had warned, stripping away three years of vows in a single breath. The realization had struck Clara harder than any physical blow. The secret late nights, the sudden distance, the whispered phone calls—it was all laid bare under the blazing crystal chandelier.
Behind them, the massive double doors stood wide open. The silver-haired patriarch, Marcus Vance, stepped across the threshold. Flanked by four silent men in tailored suits, Marcus looked less like a grandfather-to-be and more like an executioner delivering a deferred sentence. The sheer weight of his presence made the air freeze in Julian’s lungs.
""We made her a promise,"" Marcus’s voice cut through the cavernous foyer, flat and deadly.
Julian backed up half a step, pulling Lauren along with him. ""Father... this isn't what it looks like. Clara was getting hysterical—""
""Silence,"" Marcus commanded, not raising his voice. He took three deliberate steps forward, polished oxfords clicking sharply on the polished stone. His cold gaze drifted over Lauren’s bare shoulder, lingering on her possessive grip on his son's arm, before settling onto Clara’s tear-stained face.
Clara kept her chin raised, though her jaw ached from clenching. ""You knew,"" she whispered, looking at Marcus. ""All this time, you knew who he was.""
Marcus stopped between Julian and Clara. Without turning his head toward his son, he raised a gloved right hand and snapped his fingers. Two guards instantly stepped around Julian, cutting off his escape route toward the inner sanctum of the estate.
""Pack nothing,"" Marcus told Clara, his tone unreadable. ""You leave this house tonight. But you do not leave alone.""
""Wait!"" Lauren shrieked, stepping forward, her mask of poise finally cracking. ""You can't just take her! Julian is the heir to Vance Enterprises! This house belongs to us now!""
Marcus turned his head slowly, fixing Lauren with a stare that withered her voice instantly. ""You made Julian break his vows,"" Marcus said softly. Then he reached into his breast pocket and produced a crimson leather folder. ""Which means Julian has broken the trust.""
Julian’s face drained of every ounce of blood. ""Dad... no. You wouldn't.""
May you like
Marcus opened the folder, revealing an embossed seal that made Clara’s breath hitch—not a corporate seal, but an ancient crest she had only seen locked in Julian’s private safe.
""The bloodline continues through the child,"" Marcus stated chillingly. ""And you, Julian... are no longer recognized.""
