Chapter 12 - The Master Terminal

Clara stood before the sealed hatch of the mag-rail pod, cold terror washing over her. The amber warning light pulsed steadily, casting long, menacing shadows across the subterranean platform.

""Victoria! The pod is locked!"" Clara shouted into her comms. ""He has master access!""

""He accessed the primary mainframe in Marcus’s private study,"" Victoria’s voice came back, strained and breathless over static. ""Blackwood found the override protocols Marcus hid twenty years ago! Clara, he's actively purging my access from Geneva. I’m losing connection to the vault systems!""

A heavy, metallic thud resonated from the tungsten bulkhead behind Clara.

Then another.

Through the bulletproof observation glass of the vault blast door, Clara saw him.

Victor Blackwood.

He looked around sixty, tall, impeccably dressed in a dark wool overcoat despite the chaos around him. His hair was iron-gray, his face chiseled and unyielding. Behind him stood eight heavily armed private contractors carrying industrial plasma torches.

Victor looked straight through the reinforced glass at Clara. He did not look angry; he looked satisfied. He picked up a wall-mounted communications handset on the outer frame.

A speaker inside the rail terminal crackled to life.

""You have your mother's eyes, Clara,"" Victor’s voice came through, smooth, deep, and chillingly paternal. ""And, it seems, her unfortunate habit of running away.""

Clara walked up to the glass, holding Alexander securely against her chest. ""Stay back, Victor. You enter this room, and I trigger the scuttle charges. I’ll bring the entire mountain down on all of us.""

Victor smiled—a thin, cruel expression that didn't reach his cold gray eyes. ""You won't kill that child. Elena died trying to keep you alive, and you will endure anything to do the same for him. Open the door, Clara. Give me the boy, and I will allow you to live in comfort anywhere in the world.""

""He is my son,"" Clara hissed, her voice trembling with hatred. ""He will never belong to a monster.""

""He is the sole heir to the Cygnus reserves,"" Victor replied coldly. ""With his genetic key, the global syndicate bends to my will. You have five minutes before my torches breach the secondary seal. Make your peace.""

He dropped the handset. The plasma torches flared with blinding blue flame, biting deep into the edges of the tungsten door. Sparks cascaded like waterfalls across the glass.

""Victoria... do you copy?"" Clara whispered, panic finally breaking through her armor.

Static hissed in her ear. Then, a faint, garbled transmission broke through:

May you like

“...Clara... the pendant... not just... a key... it's a capacitor... shatter... the seal...”

The comms went dead.
