Chapter 3 - The Ambush at the Gates

The blaring sirens tore through the stillness of the private estate, drowning out the fountain's gentle rush. Clara stopped dead on the limestone porch, her stomach tightening with a sudden, painful spasm.
""An arrest warrant?"" Julian’s voice echoed from behind them, carrying a sudden, manic relief. He hurried out onto the terrace, Lauren trailing closely behind him. A twisted smile broke across Julian’s face. ""Did you really think I’d sit back and let you take everything, Father? You think I was just playing around these last few months?""
Marcus did not turn around. His back remained rigid, his jaw set in stone. ""What have you done, Julian?""
""Clara’s name is on the dummy corporation that funded the Baltic shell imports,"" Julian said smoothly, stepping to the terrace edge and leaning against the stone balustrade. ""Every forged bill of lading, every illegal transaction—it all traces back to her personal digital signature. I knew you had that clause in the trust, Dad. I’ve known for six months. If Clara goes to a federal penitentiary, she is deemed unfit to retain custody or estate guardianship. The child defaults to me.""
Clara felt the ground tilt beneath her. ""You framed me... for your own smuggling?""
""It’s not personal, darling,"" Lauren purred, stepping beside Julian and crossing her arms over her silk dress. ""It’s just business. A pregnant felon doesn't make a very convincing trustee, does she?""
Four unmarked black SUVs roared up the circular driveway, spraying gravel as they skidded to a halt, boxing in Marcus’s town cars. Doors flew open, and armed federal agents in tactical vests stepped out, weapons drawn low, shouting orders for everyone to freeze.
""Marcus Vance!"" shouted a tall agent holding a badge aloft. ""Step away from Clara Vance! She is under federal indictment for grand treason and corporate fraud!""
Clara backed away, her breath shallow and sharp. Another sharp cramp rippled across her abdomen, forcing a low groan from her lips. She doubled over slightly, her knees threatening to buckle.
""Clara,"" Marcus whispered, his voice low and commanding, his arm clamping around her waist to keep her upright. ""Listen to me very carefully. Do you have the pendant your mother gave you?""
""What?"" she gasped, dizzy from the sudden onset of contractions. ""Marcus, the FBI—""
""Do you have the pendant?"" he repeated, his grip tightening like iron.
""Yes... in my coat pocket,"" she managed, bewildered.

Marcus looked directly into the headlights of the advancing federal agents, unmoving. ""Then this isn't an arrest,"" he murmured, his gaze cutting toward the tree line bordering the estate. ""It’s a retrieval.""
Before the federal agent could take another step, a deafening crack echoed across the grounds, and every light across the entire estate instantly plunged into pitch-black darkness.
