Chapter 15 - Sovereign

The helicopter’s downdraft whipped Clara’s hair across her face, flattening the tall river grass around her. She struggled to her feet, holding Alexander tightly behind her armored torso, her empty submachine gun clutched uselessly in her right hand.
The helicopter hovered ten feet above the ground, and two ropes dropped into the grass.
Victor Blackwood slid down the line, landing with practiced grace despite his age. He walked toward Clara through the blinding glare of the spotlight, his dark wool coat billowing behind him. He held an ivory-handled automatic loosely by his side.
""You have your mother's stubbornness, Clara,"" Victor said, his voice easily carrying over the rotor wash. ""Running across continents, hiding in shadows, bleeding for a cause you don't even understand. Look where it brought her. Look where it brought you.""
Clara stood tall, refusing to flinch under the blinding light. Her white wedding gown was torn, stained with soot, grease, and blood, but her eyes burned with an icy, unbroken resolve.
""My mother died free,"" Clara said, her voice cutting through the noise. ""She broke you thirty years ago, Victor. And you've spent the rest of your pathetic life chasing her shadow.""
Victor’s calm expression cracked, revealing a deep, festering hatred. He raised the weapon, pointing it directly between Clara’s eyes. ""Give me the boy, Clara. Or I take him from your arms while you bleed out in this mud.""
Clara smiled—a slow, terrifyingly serene smile.
""Did you really think Victoria’s team was forty minutes away?"" she asked quietly.
Victor froze.
Above the thunder of the helicopter's rotors, a new, deafening roar tore through the sky.
Three unmarked stealth gunships dropped from the cloud cover like predatory birds, their high-powered combat spotlights locking onto Victor's transport helicopter. The synchronized whine of automated heavy miniguns spinning up echoed across the gorge.
A laser sight pinned a crimson dot directly onto Victor Blackwood’s forehead.
A dozen black-clad operatives dropped from fast-ropes around the clearing, surrounding Victor in seconds. At the front of the formation walked Victoria Stone, an assault rifle slung across her chest, her radio earpiece glowing blue.
""Drop the weapon, Victor,"" Victoria’s voice boomed over an external speaker. ""The Cygnus fleet has taken your airfields, seized your accounts, and liquidated your overseas compounds. You have nowhere left to run.""
Victor looked at the red dot on his chest, then at the ring of heavily armed soldiers, and finally at Clara. His hand began to tremble, his empire crumbling into dust beneath his feet. Slowly, deliberately, he let the ivory-handled pistol drop into the wet grass.
Clara stepped forward until she was inches from the man who had orchestrated the murder of her mother and the betrayal of her life.
""You spent your life trying to steal a crown,"" Clara whispered, looking down at him with utter disdain.

She turned to Victoria, her voice ringing out clear, absolute, and commanding across the frozen clearing.
""Take him away,"" Sovereign Clara Vance ordered. ""And let the world know the true bloodline has returned."""
