Chapter 2 - The Red Ledger

Julian tried to step toward his father, but a wall of muscle barred his path. The lead bodyguard, a scar slicing through his left eyebrow, planted a palm firmly against Julian’s chest, pushing him back until he stumbled against the grand stair rail.

""Get your hands off me!"" Julian snarled, his voice pitching into panic. ""Clara, talk to him! You can't let him do this! This is our home!""

Clara slowly peeled her eyes away from Marcus's crimson folder. Her hand remained protectively over her belly. For months, Julian had gaslit her into believing she was paranoid, hormonal, and unstable. Every late dinner, every unfamiliar perfume, every cold brush-off had been dismissed as the madness of pregnancy. Now, seeing him cornered, the grief in her chest hardened into a knot of black stone.

""You gave away this home the second you brought her into our bed,"" Clara said, her voice startlingly steady.

Lauren grabbed Julian’s arm frantically, her nails digging into the white fabric. ""Julian, tell them! Tell him about the offshore accounts! You control the boards!""

Marcus let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He flicked open the crimson ledger and tapped a single line written in calligraphy. ""The Vance Trust is governed by a singular, centuries-old clause. The heir must maintain moral succession. Infidelity during the bearing of the prime heir results in immediate, non-negotiable forfeiture of all holdings.""

Marcus looked up, his pale eyes piercing Julian’s soul. ""You signed it on your wedding day, son. You thought it was an empty ceremonial parchment.""

""That's illegal! It wouldn't hold up in court!"" Julian yelled, sweat breaking out across his forehead.

""Our courts do not use city judges, Julian,"" Marcus replied smoothly. He turned to Clara, offering his arm with an unexpected, formal courtesy. ""Come, Clara. The car is waiting. Your physician has already been relocated to the safe house.""

Clara hesitated. Trusting Marcus felt dangerous—he had always been an enigma, a man of ruthless ambition. But staying in this house meant suffocating under Julian's deceit. She stepped past Lauren, not sparing the mistress a single glance.

As Clara crossed the grand entrance threshold into the dusk, a sudden siren echoed in the distance, growing louder with terrifying speed.

Marcus paused at the heavy double doors, his expression darkening as blue and red lights began to flash against the high iron gates at the end of the driveway.

""Sir,"" the scarred bodyguard murmured, tapping his earpiece. ""That's not the local precinct. It's the Federal Bureau. And they have an arrest warrant for Mrs. Vance.""
