Chapter 10 - Into the Shadows

Clara strapped the baby securely against her chest using an armored, soundproof tactical carrier designed specifically for high-risk extractions. Alexander rested quietly, sedated by the gentle white-noise generator built into the carrier’s interior.

She picked up the compact weapon, secured an encrypted earpiece, and approached the vault door.

""Victoria, give me the thermal readout of the corridor,"" Clara ordered.

""Two hostiles in the immediate tunnel, Clara,"" Victoria whispered in her ear. ""They’re setting up seismic charges at the base of the stairs. The rest of Blackwood’s vanguard is on the upper levels searching for secondary access shafts. You have a thirty-second window once that door opens.""

""Open it,"" Clara commanded.

The tungsten door slid open just enough for Clara to slip through like a shadow into the gloom. The air smelled of cordite, blood, and damp stone.

Through her night-vision visor, two mercenaries appeared as glowing green silhouettes twenty yards ahead, their backs turned as they knelt over a plastic explosive crate.

Clara did not hesitate. The memory of Julian’s betrayal, Marcus’s mangled body, and the threat to her child surged through her veins. She raised the suppressed weapon and fired four controlled shots.

Both men collapsed without a cry, their bodies slumping against the stone walls.

Clara moved forward with swift, silent footsteps. She stepped over the bodies, ignoring the pool of blood pooling around the shattered stairs. Marcus’s body lay still beneath the debris, his eyes closed in eternal repose. Beside him, Lauren’s dead face was covered in a layer of white pulverized dust.

Clara reached the heavy steel cage of the utility elevator at the rear of the wine cellar. She bypassed the call button, manually pulling the steel cable to engage the counterweights, and ascended into the mansion’s primary maintenance hub.

""You're fifty feet from the breaker, Clara,"" Victoria said in her ear. ""Move fast. Blackwood’s convoy has just breached the estate gates.""

Clara slipped into the furnace room. The primary electrical panel was locked behind a steel grille. She raised her gun, shattered the padlock with a single round, and ripped the door open.

Her fingers flew across the switches, rerouting auxiliary geothermal power straight into the subterranean rail line. Below her, she felt the deep, rhythmic thrum of the mag-rail system coming to life.

""Grid locked,"" Clara whispered into the mic. ""Heading back.""

As she turned to step out of the utility room, a cold voice echoed through the dim hallway ahead.

""Leaving so soon, little sister?""

A tall woman in all-black tactical gear stepped into the doorway, racking the slide of an assault rifle with lethal precision.
