Chapter 10 - The Sins of the Father

The room fell into a deathly silence, save for the rhythmic crash of the waves against the cliffs below. Nora stared at Arthur, the breath entirely sucked from her lungs.

""My mother died of early-onset Huntington’s disease,"" Nora said, her words coming out hollow, mechanical. ""I watched the tremors take her. I was seven.""

""That’s what they wrote on the death certificate,"" Arthur said, slowly bending down to retrieve his cane, his knuckles turning white over the wood. ""Huntington’s doesn't appear out of thin air with no family history, Nora. The Vance Consortium was developing a neuro-synthetic compound for private military contractors—a chemical agent designed to systematically degrade the nervous system without leaving forensic trace markers.""

Thomas stepped up beside them, his voice grim. ""My father, Richard Vance, wanted a test subject that would never raise suspicions. Arthur discovered the lab records three days before your mother died. He tried to blow the whistle, but the family controlled the state police, the district attorney, and the regulatory boards.""

Arthur walked toward a mahogany table covered in legal folios and encrypted flash drives. ""They threatened to do the same to you, Nora. You were eight years old. They made it very clear: if I went to the federal authorities, you would develop the exact same 'genetic condition' before your next birthday.""

""So you ran,"" Nora whispered, a cold bead of sweat running down her spine.

""I didn't run,"" Arthur said, his voice hardening with iron authority. ""I vanished. I spent seven years moving our family’s primary wealth into blind international trusts, systematically bleeding the consortium’s liquidity dry. The moment I had enough leverage, I orchestrated the explosion at the dockyard. As long as they thought I was dead, their legal claim on those trusts was frozen in probate. They couldn't touch the money. But they couldn't touch you either, because Thomas was watching every move they made.""

Nora looked from Arthur to Thomas. ""Until Julian entered my life.""

""Julian was no coincidence,"" Thomas said quietly. ""His father is Damian's chief financial officer. They planted Julian to get close to you. They didn't know for sure if Arthur was really dead, but they knew if Julian married you or had a child with you, they could use domestic inheritance laws to break the probate hold.""

""Julian didn't want the baby,"" Nora remembered with a sickening jolt. ""He wanted me to sign the surrender papers. He wanted Maya gone.""

""Because if you surrendered parental rights,"" Arthur stated, stepping directly in front of her, his eyes blazing with protective rage, ""the child becomes a ward of the state, and the trust charter defaults entirely to the executive board. Damian would own the company outright.""

Arthur reached out, his hand hovering inches from Nora’s cheek, waiting for permission. Nora hesitated, then leaned slightly into his weathered palm. A single tear broke free, rolling over his calloused thumb.

""I kept you in the dark to keep you alive, Nora,"" Arthur choked out. ""And I failed the moment they cornered you in that hospital.""

""You didn't fail,"" Nora whispered, looking down at Maya. ""She's here. I'm here.""

Before Arthur could answer, a loud alarm klaxon began to wail through the estate. The automated security shutters began dropping over the panoramic windows with heavy metallic thuds.

The lead extraction operator from earlier kicked open the double doors of the hall, his rifle already at his shoulder.

""Sir! We have an emergency,"" the soldier shouted. ""A private maritime strike craft just breached the bay's outer perimeter. They bypassed our sea mines. Damian isn't retreating. He tracked our flight vector.""
