Chapter 13 - Reckoning in the Glass

A massive shape crashed through the shattered skylight, descending on a steel wire with the speed of a falling hawk. It was the commander of Bravo extraction team, hitting Julian with the full momentum of his body armor.
Julian’s submachine gun flew from his grasp, clattering over the marble balustrade and spinning across the floor below. The two men crashed hard onto the mezzanine, rolling in a tangle of limbs and broken glass before the commander struck Julian across the jaw with the heavy composite butt of his combat knife, knocking him completely unconscious.
Arthur looked up, calmly dusting a shower of glass crystals from his shoulder. ""Appreciate the timing, Captain,"" he called out dryly.
""Just doing our job, sir,"" the operator replied, hauling Julian’s limp form over the railing like a sack of grain and dropping him to the ballroom floor. ""One rat down. But the head of the snake is still loose in the basement.""
Inside the vault, Nora let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for days. But there was no time to celebrate. The lights in the study flickered violently, then died, replaced immediately by the amber glow of emergency battery strips.
WARNING: PRIMARY GENERATOR BREACHED. AUXILIARY POWER AT FOURTEEN PERCENT.
The synthetic voice chimed with alarming urgency.
""Damian made it to the core,"" Thomas said, cocking his pistol. ""He's sabotaging the coolant pumps. If the generator overloads, it will take this entire wing of the house down with it. Stay here, Nora.""
""No,"" Nora said, pulling Maya tightly against her chest. ""The auxiliary protocols only respond to manual biometric verification at the terminal in the basement. If you go down there alone, you can't reset the breakers.""
Thomas stared at her, seeing the absolute refusal in her eyes. There was no fear left in her, only a mother's savage protective instinct.
""Arthur!"" Thomas barked into the radio. ""Meet us at the generator junction. Damian is cornered, but he's got the dead-man switch on the power grid.""
They exited the vault, moving quickly through the dimly lit service corridors. The air grew progressively hotter as they descended into the bowels of the compound. The hum of the industrial turbines was a deafening, vibrating roar that resonated in Nora’s teeth.
They reached the heavy reinforced door of the generator chamber. The glass viewing port was cracked, smeared with black soot from an electrical explosion.
Thomas kicked the door open, clearing the corners with his pistol raised.
The room was vast, filled with towering rows of humming transformers and cooling tanks. Standing atop the central control platform, bathed in the red glow of emergency strobes, was Damian Vance.

His face was streaked with grease, his tailored jacket discarded, his shirt torn open to reveal a web of wire harnesses strapped across his chest. In his right hand, he held a digital detonator.
""Welcome to the board meeting, Nora,"" Damian shouted over the screaming whine of the failing turbine. ""I was wondering when the CEO would show up to sign the final severance package.""
