Chapter 14 - The Severance Clause

""Step away from the control panel, Damian,"" Thomas said, advancing slowly across the catwalk, his gun locked on the center of Damian’s chest. ""It's over. Your mercenaries are dead or captured. Julian is in custody. The offshore accounts are frozen.""

Damian let out a wild, barking laugh that echoed madly off the metal conduits. ""You think I care about the offshore accounts, Thomas? You think this was about money? This company was our family's divine right! Arthur threw it in the dirt for a common whore and a bastard child!""

Arthur stepped into the doorway behind Nora, his cane clicking heavily on the steel grating. ""My wife was twice the human being your father ever was, Damian. And her daughter will dismantle every single poison you ever engineered.""

""She won't live to dismantle a toaster,"" Damian snarled, raising the detonator high so all of them could see the glowing red trigger. ""This whole facility is built over an old naval bunker. The turbine's auxiliary fuel tanks hold forty thousand gallons of diesel. One spark, and this mountain slides into the Atlantic Ocean.""

Maya began to cry, the sharp, shrill sound cutting through the mechanical roar.

Damian’s eyes flicked to the infant, a cruel smirk touching his lips. ""Listen to that. Even the little brat knows her pedigree ends today.""

Nora didn't flinch. She stepped forward, moving past Thomas, her eyes boring into Damian's.

""You're not going to press that button, Damian,"" she said, her voice impossibly calm, steady, and terrifyingly cold.

Damian scoffed, his thumb hovering over the switch. ""Try me, cousin.""

""You spent your whole life worshipping power,"" Nora said, taking another deliberate step up the catwalk stairs. ""Men who want to die don't wear $5,000 suits. They don't buy senators. They don't run from gunfights. You're terrified of dying. You're terrified of disappearing into nothing, just like your father did.""

Damian's jaw tightened, his fingers twitching slightly over the detonator. ""I'll take you with me!""

""No, you won't,"" Nora said softly. ""Because you forgot the most basic rule of the company charter.""

She didn't look back at the wall console behind her. Without breaking eye contact, she reached out with her left hand and shoved a heavy manual emergency lever downward with the full weight of her body.

FIRE SUPPRESSION PROTOCOL: LIQUID NITROGEN VENTING IN SECTOR NINE.

From the industrial nozzles directly above the catwalk platform, a torrential blast of sub-zero cryogenic gas exploded downward. Damian barely had time to scream before the freezing mist engulfed him. The sheer thermal shock instantly crystallized his hands and the detonator, shattering the plastic casing before the electrical signal could bridge the gap to the charges.

Damian staggered backward, gasping as his lungs burned from the freezing vapor, dropping to his knees on the frosted metal grating.

Thomas was on him in an instant. He kicked the shattered remnants of the detonator off the platform, drove his knee into Damian’s back, and pinned his arms behind him with heavy zip-ties, pulling them tight until the plastic bit into the bone.

The emergency sirens wound down. The screaming turbines began to slow, their roar subsiding into a low, safe hum as the automatic coolant pumps engaged.

Nora stood atop the platform, holding Maya close, watching Damian gasp for breath on the frost-covered floor.

Arthur walked slowly up the stairs, resting his hand gently on Nora's shoulder.

""It's finished,"" Arthur whispered. ""The board is yours.""

Nora looked down at Damian, her voice cold and final. ""Call the authorities. Tell them the Vance Consortium has a new executive director. And we're opening our books to the world.""
