Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Ledger

The man standing over the hatch was Julian’s older brother, Damian Vance. His eyes carried the exact same cold, reptilian detachment Nora had seen in the hospital corridor, but with none of Julian’s cowardly hesitation. Damian was the prodigal executive, the architect of the syndicate’s clean public face.
""Don't climb out just yet,"" Damian murmured, pointing the muzzle of his pistol directly at Nora's forehead. ""Let's keep things civilized. Hand the child to the gentleman behind me.""
Another man stepped into view, dressed in heavy tactical gear, his gloved hands reaching down toward the trapdoor.
""Touch her and I drop this key down the sewer grate behind me,"" Nora bluffed, holding the brass key tightly between her fingers, her voice carrying a venom she didn't know she possessed. ""Thomas told me what it unlocks. You kill me, you never get the ledger.""
Damian didn't flinch. Instead, he smiled, a thin, cruel parting of lips. ""The safe deposit box in Boston? Please, Nora. That key is just a backup. Arthur always was a sentimental fool, believing paper records could save him from modern financial realities. We already seized the safety box three days ago.""
Nora felt her stomach drop away. The bravado evaporated, leaving only raw terror.
""Then what do you want with us?"" she whispered, clutching Maya tighter against her chest.
""You don't understand how the trust was written, do you?"" Damian crouched down, bringing his face closer to the opening. ""Arthur’s grandfather built a safeguard into the founding charter. The shares cannot be transferred, dissolved, or acquired through hostile buyout as long as a direct, living blood descendant of the firstborn line exists. If Arthur dies, his child inherits automatically. If his child dies... the shares default to the corporate board.""
He reached down, his fingers lightly brushing Maya's tiny forehead. Nora flinched violently away, baring her teeth.
""You're going to kill my baby,"" Nora stated, cold realization washing over her.
""Not here,"" Damian said calmly, standing back up. ""A mother and child dying in an isolated cabin looks far too much like an execution. But a tragic car accident on a slick coastal highway? A young, unwed mother suffering from postpartum psychosis, driving off the cliffs of Point Reyes? That... the press will mourn for a day and forget by Friday.""
He nodded to the tactical guard. ""Bring them up. Put them in the back of the town car.""
The guard reached down and hauled Nora out of the hatch by her upper arm. She stumbled onto the floorboards, keeping Maya protected with her own body. As she was dragged toward the door, she caught Thomas’s eyes.
He wasn't dead. His face was bruised and bloody, but beneath his half-closed lids, his pupils were alert, tracking Damian's movements. His bound hands behind his back were quietly working against the plastic restraints against the sharp metal edge of a broken floor lamp.

He blinked once at Nora. A silent signal.
Outside, the heavy roar of an approaching helicopter began to drown out the morning rain, rattling the cabin's remaining windowpanes.
