Chapter 12 - The Iron Vault

Thomas shoved Nora into the reinforced study, slamming the heavy blast door behind them. The room was lined with monitors displaying tactical layouts of the entire island compound. Red flashing icons dotted the exterior grounds, representing Damian’s mercenaries advancing like a swarm of locusts through the burning gardens.

""Over there,"" Thomas directed, pointing to a central console set into a block of black granite. ""Place your palm on the scanner and read the text on the screen.""

Nora stepped up to the terminal, her hand trembling slightly as she pressed her bare palm against the glowing glass plate. Maya stirred, letting out a small whimper, but Nora kept her eyes steady on the screen.

A green laser line swept over her skin.

BIOMETRIC SCAN CONFIRMED: NORA ELEANOR VANCE. CHAIRPERSON SUCCESSION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED.

A cold, synthetic voice echoed through the room: ""Welcome home, Miss Vance. System status: Compromised. Thirty-four hostiles detected within inner security perimeter.""

""Override executive lock,"" Nora commanded, her voice dropping into a register of icy authority. ""Isolate the compound wings. Seal all internal pressure bulkheads.""

""Command recognized. Sealing sectors three through seven.""

Through the tactical monitors, Nora watched as massive steel doors slammed down across the hallways, trapping several teams of Damian's mercenaries in the narrow connecting corridors. Halon fire-suppression gas began venting automatically into the sealed spaces, neutralizing the advancing forces without firing a single bullet.

""Brilliant,"" Thomas muttered, reloading his rifle while keeping his eyes glued to the monitors. ""She cut their force in half with three sentences.""

""Where is Damian?"" Nora asked, zooming in on the compound map.

A single red marker was moving rapidly through an underground service duct toward the generator room directly beneath them.

""He's not trying to fight Arthur,"" Thomas said, his face darkening. ""He knows the layout. He's heading for the primary power nexus. If he cuts the main generators, all the blast doors fail open automatically.""

Suddenly, the screen showing the grand ballroom flickered to life.

Arthur stood in the center of the vast, marble-floored room, holding an antique silver-inlaid shotgun, surrounded by four fallen mercenaries. But he was out of ammunition. Emerging from the shadows of the mezzanine above was Julian, holding a heavy submachine gun, his designer clothes torn and covered in soot.

Julian looked wild, unhinged, driven mad by fear and desperation.

""Arthur!"" Julian’s voice cracked through the security intercom. ""Tell your bitch daughter to unlock the vault! Damian will kill me if I don't bring him the bearer bonds!""

Arthur didn't flinch. He leaned on his cane, looking up at Julian with utter contempt. ""You're a cowardly boy playing a man's game, Julian. You couldn't even look your own daughter in the eyes before you tried to steal her future.""

Julian raised the gun, aiming directly at Arthur's chest. ""I don't give a damn about that baby! I want my life back!""

Nora's fingers dug into the edge of the granite console until her knuckles turned purple. She slammed her hand down on the global communications switch.

""Julian,"" she spoke into the microphone, her voice echoing through the ballroom speakers with terrifying clarity. ""Look into the security camera above your head.""

Julian flinched, his eyes darting to the lens mounted on the mezzanine wall.

""You said she wasn't yours,"" Nora said, her words dripping with ice. ""You were right. She carries the blood of giants. You're just a parasite. And your time is up.""

Before Julian could pull the trigger, the glass skylight above the mezzanine shattered into a thousand pieces.
