Chapter 2 - The Redacted Protocol

The elevator doors slid open, revealing four men in unmarked tactical gear, their submachine guns lowered but held at low-ready. Behind them stood Marcus Sterling, Bella’s older brother and the chief operating officer of Sterling Maritime Logistics.

Marcus stepped across the threshold, shaking the rain from his dark cashmere trench coat. His expression was placid, devoid of the panic unraveling Julian and Bella.

"I warned you, Julian," Marcus said smoothly, completely ignoring Vince’s towering, murderous posture. "When dealing with street dogs who inherited shipping lanes, you don't use pens. You use paperwork backed by enforcement."

"Marcus," Bella choked out, stumbling toward him. "The recording... Sofia... she has a phone..."

Marcus caught his sister by the elbow, his grip tight enough to leave bruises beneath the silk. "Quiet, Bella." He looked past her to the little girl standing beside Vince. His eyes narrowed with chilling calculation. "I see the courier made it through after all. Impressive for a runaway from the cantonment."

Vince stood in front of Lily, shielding her entirely from view. "You have five seconds to tell me where my wife is before I dismantle this entire building with you inside it."

Marcus chuckled, a low, dry sound. "Your wife is an invalid, Vince. Or rather, she was. Whatever ghost stories this little orphan has been paid to deliver, the reality is far simpler: the board declared you psychologically unfit forty-eight hours ago. That document on the table was your dignified exit. This," he gestured to the armed men behind him, "is the undignified one."

"You forged her death certificate," Vince said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The fire at the clinic... you staged it."

"Staged is such an ugly word," Marcus replied, stepping into the room. "We preserved an asset. Sofia discovered things about the southern transit routes that didn't concern her. She wanted to turn the Moreno manifests over to the federal maritime commission. Can you imagine the losses? Billions in unvetted cargo wiped clean because your wife had a sudden moral awakening."

Marcus took out an encrypted burner phone from his pocket and tapped the screen twice.

On the shattered display of Lily’s phone, the audio waveform suddenly crackled back to life. But it wasn't Sofia's voice anymore. It was a live transmission feed.

A low, mechanical hum filled the room, followed by the steady, rhythmic beep of a life support monitor. Through the speaker came the strained, fragile sound of a woman breathing through an oxygen mask.

"Vince..." Sofia’s voice came through, far weaker now, distorted by distance and interference. "He’s... he’s not here for the company. He’s looking for the ledger... Lily has the key to the vault... don't let them take her back to the black site..."

A sharp slap echoed through the transmission, followed by the sound of someone ripping off an oxygen mask. Sofia gasped in raw agony.

"Vince!" Bella screamed, seeing the sheer fury that broke across Vince's features. "Wait!"

Vince didn't wait. He seized the heavy marble centerpiece on the table and hurled it across the room with devastating force. The stone shattered against the chest plate of the lead tactical guard, dropping him instantly to the floor. Before the second guard could raise his weapon, Vince closed the distance, his fist connecting with the man’s jaw with an impact like a splitting log.

Gunfire erupted, shattering the floor-to-ceiling glass into a million glittering diamonds that cascaded into the night rain.

"Get the girl!" Marcus roared, pulling Bella behind him as he retreated toward the elevator.

Julian lunged forward to grab Lily by the collar of her sweater. But the little girl didn't scream. With lightning speed, she drove a hidden stainless steel pen into Julian’s thigh. The lawyer shrieked, collapsing in agony.

Vince wrenched the fallen guard's rifle from his grip, firing two precise rounds into the elevator control panel. Sparks exploded violently from the wall, and the elevator doors slammed shut, severing Marcus and Bella’s escape route upward.

Marcus cursed, lunging toward the stairwell door. "Burn the room! Leave neither of them alive!"

A flashbang rolled across the hardwood floor, blinding the dining room in an inferno of white light and deafening thunder.

When Vince blinked away the burning white spots in his vision, Marcus and Bella were gone through the fire escape, Julian lay groaning in a pool of his own blood, and Lily was kneeling beside him, pressing the burnt parchment into Vince’s palm.

"We have to go now," Lily whispered, her eyes wide under the falling rain blowing through the shattered window. "They have my mother at the dry docks."

Vince grabbed her, tucking her under his arm as he moved toward the private freight lift at the rear of the penthouse. But as the freight doors closed, he looked down at the blood-stained note in his hand.

Scrawled beneath the autopsy requisition was a child's medical birth record.
