Chapter 7 - The Sky Above the Bay

The spotlight from the descending helicopter washed the pier in blinding white light, turning the driving rain into streaks of falling silver.
Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled the trigger of his rifle, sending a burst of armor-piercing rounds chewing through the concrete at Vince’s feet. Vince dove behind a stack of rusted steel mooring bollards, chips of stone and hot lead grazing his cheek.
Behind him, on the crane’s lower gantry, he saw Sofia pulling Lily behind the steel machinery housing, safe from the spray of gunfire. Seeing them secure gave Vince a terrifying clarity. The hesitation that had plagued him for the six months of his grief was entirely gone.
Over the helicopter’s external loudspeaker, the pilot's voice crackled: "Clear the pad! We have low fuel, we cannot hover!"
"Get on the skid!" Marcus shouted, shoving Bella violently toward the open cabin door of the helicopter, which hovered three feet above the wet tarmac.
Bella was sobbing, her evening gown shredded and coated in filthy rainwater, her diamond necklace gone. "Marcus, my bags! The bearer bonds are in the car!"
"Forget the money, you idiot!" Marcus snarled, hauling himself onto the skid. "The whole city is going to be swarming with federals in ten minutes! We leave now!"
Vince broke cover.
He didn't fire his weapon—his Kimber was empty, its slide locked back. Instead, Vince sprinted toward the perimeter fence where the crane's mooring cable lay coiled around a heavy industrial tug winch. He grabbed the heavy steel hook at the end of the high-tensile wire, sprinting directly through the helicopter's rotor wash.
The downdraft was deafening, the smell of burnt aviation fuel burning his lungs.
Marcus spotted him through the open door, raising his rifle to fire. "Die, you dockyard trash!"
Vince lunged, throwing the forty-pound steel hook with every ounce of muscle in his back and shoulders directly into the helicopter’s open landing skid assembly. The heavy forged iron clamped around the tubular skid with a sickening metallic clang.
Marcus fired, the bullet catching Vince high in the right shoulder. The impact spun Vince around, knocking him to his knees, his vision graying at the edges.
"Pull up! Pull up!" Marcus shrieked to the pilot, kicking at the cable hook hooked to the skid.
The Eurocopter banked violently, its turbine engine screaming as it surged upward into the night sky, lifting off the dock. But the steel cable was anchored to the twenty-ton winch drum bolted into three feet of reinforced harbor concrete.
The cable pulled taut with an ear-splitting hum.
At fifty feet of altitude, the aircraft ran out of slack. The heavy cable snapped straight, jerking the helicopter's tail assembly downward with catastrophic violence. The tail rotor clipped the corner of a rusted shipping container in a blinding shower of sparks and shearing titanium blades.
"No!" Bella’s scream was cut short as the helicopter lost all directional stability, spinning like a dying dragonfly over the harbor water before slamming into the deep channel forty yards from the pier.
The explosion was a muffled, subterranean thump, sending a massive plume of dark water, burning aviation fuel, and broken debris geysering into the rainy sky.
Vince lay on his back on the cold, wet concrete, clutching his bleeding shoulder, watching the burning slick of fuel spread across the black water. The rain washed the grime from his face, cooling the fever in his blood.
Soft footfalls sounded on the tarmac.
Vince turned his head. Sofia was walking toward him, supported by Lily, who held her mother's hand with fierce, protective pride.
Sofia dropped to her knees beside Vince, her fingers gently brushing the hair from his bloodied forehead. Tears cut clean paths through the soot on her cheeks.
"It’s over," she whispered. "Vince... it's over."
Vince reached up with his uninjured hand, his tattooed fingers closing over hers. "Not yet," he rasped, looking toward the main gate where sirens were already wailing in the distance. "Julian is still breathing. And he hasn't told the federal prosecutor where the rest of the ledgers are buried."
Lily knelt beside him, placing Sofia’s cracked phone on Vince’s chest.
On the screen, the voice memo had finally finished playing, revealing a new notification: an encrypted file upload completed to the United States Attorney’s Office.

Sofia leaned down and kissed his cracked lips. "I sent it the moment the crane dropped. The Moreno name is clean."
Vince closed his eyes as the red and blue emergency lights began painting the wet docks in shades of neon justice.
