Chapter 6 - The Shattered Slipway

Vince guided Sofia through the narrow maintenance duct until it terminated behind the crane staging platform on the ship's main weather deck. The rain had intensified into a howling squall, sweeping across the dark harbor.

Below them, on the dock apron, three black tactical vehicles had formed a perimeter around Vince’s SUV. Julian Vance stood under an umbrella near the front bumper, holding a crowbar, trying to force the reinforced glass of the passenger window where Lily was trapped inside.

"Open the door, you little brat!" Julian shrieked, his composure entirely gone, his tailored suit soaked and ruined. "Open it or I’ll burn this car to the rim!"

Inside the SUV, Lily sat rigid, her tiny hands holding the door locks down, her face pressed against the glass with stubborn defiance.

"Look at that coward," Vince muttered, handing his spare magazine to Sofia. "Stay low behind this winch housing. When the noise starts, don't look back."

"Vince, wait," Sofia grabbed his wrist. "Marcus has an extraction helicopter inbound. You can't fight all of them."

"I don't have to," Vince said, a cold, predatory smirk carving across his face.

He slipped away into the shadows of the deck, maneuvering toward the massive yellow control cab of the gantry crane perched eighty feet above the dock. The crane was ancient, but its counterweights were rated for forty tons of containerized cargo.

Two guards patrolled the base of the crane ladder. Vince dropped down from a shipping container directly between them. His landing broke the neck of the first guard instantly; a split-second later, his silenced Kimber discharged twice into the chest of the second.

Without missing a beat, Vince scrambled up the iron ladder into the crane cab. The controls were dead, but Vince didn't need the electrical grid. He located the emergency brake release lever—a mechanical hydraulic bypass designed to drop loads in case of catastrophic engine failure.

Down below, Marcus Sterling had emerged from the warehouse office, yelling into a satellite phone while walking toward the SUV. "Julian! Break the damn glass! The chopper is two minutes out! We take the girl and leave Moreno's corpse in the water!"

Vince kicked the safety pin from the crane's primary winch drum.

With a screech that tore through the stormy sky, the massive four-ton steel spreader bar suspended eighty feet above plummeted like a meteor.

The steel bar smashed directly into the hood of Marcus’s tactical transport, obliterating the engine block and sending a shockwave through the concrete apron that threw Julian Vance violently onto his back. Shrapnel tore through the rain, shredding the tires of the surrounding vehicles.

Guards screamed, scattering in pure panic as alarm sirens across the shipyard began wailing.

"Sniper!" one of the surviving mercenaries yelled, spraying blind automatic fire up toward the crane tower.

Vince didn't stay in the cab. Using the crane’s steel guy-wire, he slid down to the dock apron using his leather belt as a friction brake. He hit the wet concrete at a dead run, firing three rapid shots that eliminated the two guards near the SUV.

Julian scrambled across the asphalt on his hands and knees, dragging his wounded leg, his face pale with horror as he looked up to see Vince towering over him like an avenging demon, covered in hydraulic grease, blood, and seawater.

"Vince... please!" Julian cried out, raising trembling hands. "It was Marcus! Bella made me do it! They were going to kill me if I didn't forge the papers!"

Vince looked down at the man who had been his legal counsel for a decade, the man he had invited to his wedding, the man who had comforted him at Sofia’s empty grave.

"You took six months of my daughter's life," Vince whispered.

He didn't waste a bullet. Vince drove his steel-toed boot into Julian’s face with crushing finality, knocking the lawyer cold against the pavement.

He ripped open the door of the SUV. Lily threw her arms around his neck, burying her face into his wet collar. "Daddy!"

The word hit Vince like a physical blow, cracking the armor around his heart. He held her tight for a single, precious second, then set her down. "Your mother is on the crane platform. Go to her. Right now."

Lily gasped, her eyes shining through the dark. "She's alive?"

"Go," Vince urged softly.

Lily ran toward the ladder just as the rhythmic thumping of heavy rotor blades tore through the storm clouds overhead. A sleek, black Eurocopter descended toward the open container yard, its spotlight sweeping across the docks.

In the center of the landing zone stood Marcus Sterling, dragging a hysterical Bella by the arm toward the waiting aircraft.

Marcus turned, spotted Vince emerging from the wreckage, and raised a customized semi-automatic assault rifle.

"You should have stayed dead, Moreno!" Marcus screamed over the roar of the helicopter.
