Chapter 8 - The Shadow Escrow

The private hospital wing of St. Jude’s was locked down under armed federal guard. Outside the suite’s bulletproof windows, morning light broke through the retreating storm clouds, casting pale gold beams across the sterile floor.
Vince sat in an armchair beside Sofia’s bed, his right arm bound in a tight sling, his neck tattoos dark against the white collar of a clean shirt. On the bed, Sofia was hooked to a saline IV, her color slowly returning under the care of doctors who were not on Marcus Sterling's payroll. Lily was curled up at the foot of the bed, fast asleep with her head resting on a plush teddy bear Vince’s security team had procured at dawn.
Special Agent David Chen of the Department of Homeland Investigations stood at the foot of the bed, closing a thick manila file with a snap.
"Julian Vance started singing the moment the surgeon pulled the pen out of his thigh," Chen said, his tone flat, professional, and thoroughly exhausted. "He’s handed over thirteen shell corporations, two clandestine dry docks, and the banking routes Marcus used to launder money for the Balkan cartels."
"And Bella?" Vince asked, his voice steady.
Chen’s jaw tightened. "Coast Guard recovered the wreckage from the harbor two hours ago. The pilot and Marcus were strapped in; they didn't survive the impact. But Bella..." Chen paused, glancing out the window. "Her seatbelt was unbuckled. The cabin door was torn open. Divers found her silk dress caught on a submerged piling, but no body."
Vince went cold. "She survived."
"She was a collegiate swimmer before she entered high society," Sofia whispered from the bed, her eyes open, shadowed with exhaustion. "She always had an escape route. If she’s alive, she won't leave the country empty-handed."
"She has nothing left," Chen insisted. "We froze every asset tied to the Sterling and Vance names at midnight."
"You froze the domestic accounts," Sofia replied, struggling to sit up. Vince immediately rose, placing a gentle hand behind her back to support her. Sofia looked directly at Chen. "You didn't freeze the Geneva escrow. Because you don't have the jurisdiction, and you don't have the key."
Chen frowned. "What escrow?"
"Seventy million dollars in bearer bonds, deposited by Vince’s father forty years ago as a contingency fund for the shipping line," Sofia explained. "It requires physical presentation of a cryptographic token. Bella found the vault location in my personal papers before she locked me away. The only reason she stayed in the city was to get Vince's signature on the asset release."
"If she survived the bay," Vince said, his voice dropping into a lethal, quiet register, "she knows the domestic game is finished. She will head straight for the private vault in the consulate district to claim those bonds before the Swiss authorities receive the federal warrants."
"The Swiss consulate doesn't open until nine," Chen said, checking his watch. "It’s seven-thirty now. We can have a tactical unit surround the block."
"No," Vince said, stepping away from the chair. "Bella won't walk through the front door. The consulate building shares a sub-basement with the old merchant bank through the transit tunnels. My grandfather built those tunnels, Agent Chen. Your men don't know the layout. They'll walk into an ambush."
"Mr. Moreno, you are a civilian recovering from a gunshot wound," Chen warned sternly. "I cannot authorize you to engage."
Vince walked over to the nightstand, picked up his leather holster, and strapped it across his uninjured shoulder with practiced efficiency.
"I’m not asking for your authorization, Agent Chen," Vince said, looking down at his sleeping daughter, then back to Sofia, whose eyes burned with quiet understanding. "I’m protecting my family."

As Vince reached the door, Lily stirred, opening her hazel eyes. "Daddy?"
Vince turned back, offering the first genuine smile he had felt in months. "Go back to sleep, Lily. I have to settle an old bill."
