Chapter 1 - The Cold Marble

The polished white marble was cold against Clara’s bruised cheek. Her ear rang with a high, piercing whine from the force of Ethan’s blow, drowning out the faint scent of scorched silk and ozone hanging in the air. Above her, Ethan stood like an executioner carved from dark granite, his velvet tuxedo taut across his broad shoulders, his knuckles white and trembling with an outrage that had blindsided her completely.
In the corner of the panoramic living room, Elena held baby Leo tightly against her dark blue maid’s uniform. Her face was flushed, tears streaming down her cheeks with theatrical perfection, but beneath that trembling lower lip, Clara caught the briefest glint of icy triumph. The iron lay on its side near the ivory armchair, its blue indicator light still pulsing, hissing faintly against the marble.
"You monster," Ethan’s voice cut through the ringing silence. It wasn’t just anger; it was pure disgust, absolute and unyielding. "You’re dead to this family. You hear me? Dead."
Clara tried to push herself up, her beaded pearl strap snapping under her weight and sending miniature ivory spheres skittering across the floor. "Ethan, listen to me..." Her throat burned, her voice hoarse and broken. "I didn't... I heard Leo crying from the hallway. The iron was already there. It was plugged in right next to him. I was trying to pull it away—"
"Save your filthy lies!" Elena wailed, clutching Leo tighter as the infant wailed in distress. "I walked in and she had it inches from his skin, Mr. Vance! She was lowering it! If I hadn't pushed her away, he would have been scarred for life!"
"Look at her, Clara," Ethan hissed, stepping between Clara and the child as if she were a rabid animal. "Look at what you’ve become. You were always jealous that Leo wasn’t your biological child, but I never imagined you were this depraved."
"Ethan, please, check the cameras!" Clara pleaded, tears finally spilling hot over her stinging cheek. "Look at the security feeds! Check the living room footage!"
Ethan’s laugh was brittle and devoid of warmth. "I don't need a screen to confirm what my own eyes and Elena just witnessed. Get up. Get your things. If you're still on this estate in ten minutes, I'll have security drag you out into the street, and I will personally ensure the police put you in a cage where you belong."
He turned his back on her, reaching out to wrap a protective arm around Elena’s shoulders as he guided her and the baby toward the master suite. As Elena turned the corner, she glanced back over Ethan’s shoulder. Her tears were gone. Her lips curved into a sharp, victorious smirk, and she raised a single manicured hand to blow Clara a mocking kiss.

Clara pulled herself to her feet, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she gathered her dignity from the ruined floor. She didn't pack her designer dresses or the expensive jewelry Ethan had bought her during their hollow three-year marriage. She grabbed only her personal passport, her late mother's simple silver locket, and her phone.
When she stepped out of the gilded iron gates of the Vance estate into the drizzling evening, her phone vibrated in her pocket. It was an automated banking notification: every joint account had been frozen, and her personal card was declined. But beneath that notification lay an encrypted text from an unknown number: 'The trap was set long before today, Mrs. Vance. If you want to know who really ordered your ruin, walk to the end of the boulevard and get into the black sedan.'
