Chapter 5 - The First Domino

Ethan Vance burst into the executive boardroom on the forty-second floor of Vance Enterprises, his tie loosened, sweat glistening at his temples. The morning sun poured through the panoramic glass windows, illuminating the pristine mahogany conference table where Clara sat waiting, an espresso cup balanced delicately in her manicured hand.
"What is the meaning of this, Miss Sterling?" Ethan demanded, slamming a legal brief onto the table. "You bought out the Apex Capital note? That was a private debt facility!"
"It was a distressed debt facility, Mr. Vance," Clara replied without looking up from her tablet. "Apex was facing liquidity issues of their own. I offered them ninety-two cents on the dollar in cash. They were thrilled to be rid of you."
Elena entered the room behind Ethan, carrying a leather binder. She looked visibly exhausted, her usual immaculate poise frayed at the edges. "Ethan, Victor is on line two. He's furious. He said Apex was supposed to transfer those shares to Cross Holdings by noon."
Clara allowed herself a subtle, razor-thin smile. "It seems Victor Cross wasn't moving fast enough. Business favors the decisive, Miss Cross."
Ethan dropped into the leather chair opposite Clara, running both hands through his disheveled hair. "Why, Vivian? Why ambush me like this if you want to partner with us?"
"Because I don't partner with amateurs," Clara said, leaning forward, her dark eyes locking onto his with hypnotic intensity. "You are under the thumb of Victor Cross. He engineered your debt squeeze, Ethan. He placed his sister in your home and your executive offices to ensure you never looked anywhere else for salvation."
Elena bristled violently. "How dare you! I have dedicated my life to Ethan and this company! I saved his son!"
"Did you?" Clara tilted her head, her gaze shifting to Elena like a scalpel. "Or did you simply clear the board of a wife who was inconveniently in the way of your family's acquisition?"
Elena’s face drained of color. For a terrifying second, Elena stared into Clara’s dark eyes, searching for a ghost she thought was rotting at the bottom of the bay. "You... you don't know what you're talking about."
"Enough!" Ethan barked, slamming his palm on the desk. "Leave my personal life out of this, Miss Sterling. What are your terms?"
Clara slid a contract across the table. "I inject eighty million dollars immediately. That clears your short-term debt, eliminates Victor Cross's leverage, and finances the phase-three trials of Project Aether."
Ethan’s eyes widened as he skimmed the figures. It was an absolute lifeline. "And in exchange?"
"Forty-five percent equity in Vance Enterprises," Clara stated evenly. "And the immediate dismissal of Elena Cross from the Vance Charitable Trust."
"No!" Elena gasped, lunging toward the desk. "Ethan, you can't! She's trying to isolate you! She’s trying to dismantle everything we built!"
"Elena is family!" Ethan protested, though the hesitation in his eyes was painfully obvious. He was a creature of self-preservation, and Clara knew it better than anyone. "She raised Leo after Clara... after Clara died."
"Elena is a liability," Clara countered, her voice cold as dry ice. "Charitable foundations under the Vance name are currently being audited by regulatory authorities for suspicious offshore disbursements. Did she mention that to you, Ethan?"
Ethan froze, turning his head slowly toward Elena. "What is she talking about?"
Elena stammered, stepping back, her confident facade cracking completely. "It’s... it's a routine review, Ethan! It’s nothing, I swear!"
"It’s an embezzlement investigation involving four million dollars transferred to a shell company in the Cayman Islands," Clara said, standing up and smoothing her pencil skirt. "Sign the agreement by five o'clock, Mr. Vance, and I save your empire. Keep Elena, and tomorrow morning the federal prosecutors will freeze every asset you have left."

She walked toward the door, pausing with her hand on the silver handle. "The clock is ticking, Ethan. Choose between your savior... and your ruin."
As the door clicked shut behind her, she heard Elena scream in rage, followed by the violent crash of a shattered crystal decanter against the mahogany wall.
