Chapter 7 - The Midnight Breach

The research facility of Vance Enterprises was nestled in an industrial park on the northern edge of the city, surrounded by reinforced concrete walls and high-tech security checkpoints. At 2:00 AM, a heavy fog rolled in from the river, blanketing the compound in ghost-white vapor.

A sleek black SUV pulled up to the service gate. Elena stepped out, dressed in dark tactical casuals, her Vance executive badge hanging around her neck. She swiped the card at the perimeter gate. The light blinked green. Ethan had stripped her of corporate authority on paper, but the system credentials would not officially update until 8:00 AM.

She smiled bitterly as she bypassed the primary reception desk, heading straight for the subterranean vaults where the prototype synthesized batches of Project Aether—Clara’s father's original compound—were stored.

She slipped into the cleanroom, pulling on latex gloves. The sterile fluorescent lights buzzed softly overhead. In the center of the room, nestled inside a temperature-controlled cryogenic safe, sat the six primary vials containing the stabilized formula. Beside them sat the chemical precursors.

Elena pulled a small glass syringe from her pocket, filled with a highly concentrated neurotoxin. Victor’s plan was brutally simple: contaminate the phase-three trial batches. When the human trials began next week, three patients would suffer fatal cardiac arrest within minutes of administration. The subsequent federal investigation would trace the fatal error directly to Ethan Vance's personal oversight, destroying the company and sending Ethan to federal prison for involuntary manslaughter.

"A fitting end for a traitor," Elena whispered, unlocking the cryogenic chamber. The frost misted out over her fingers. She raised the syringe, aiming the needle directly at the rubber stopper of the first vial.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Elena."

The sudden voice echoed sharply in the sterile room.

Elena gasped, spinning around, nearly dropping the syringe. Standing by the airlock door, leaning casually against the steel frame, was Vivian Sterling. Behind her stood two imposing men in tactical security gear, their faces hidden behind ballistic masks, video cameras mounted on their helmets glowing red.

"You?!" Elena sneered, her heart racing as she backed against the cryogenic unit. "How did you get in here? This is private property!"

"I own forty-five percent of this property," Clara replied smoothly, stepping into the cleanroom. She wore a tailored black coat, her dark hair pulled back in a severe ponytail. "And as the managing partner of operations, I have every right to inspect our assets. Especially when an embezzler tries to commit corporate sabotage."

Elena raised the syringe threateningly. "Stay back! If you take one more step, I'll smash every vial in this safe! Decades of research, gone in seconds!"

"Those aren't the real vials, you fool," Clara said with a cold, mocking laugh.

Elena froze, looking down at the safe.

"The actual Aether compound was relocated to Thorne Capital vaults six hours ago," Clara explained, taking another slow, deliberate step forward. "Those vials contain colored saline. But the neurotoxin in your hand? That's very real. And the cameras recording this feed are streaming directly to the state district attorney's office."

Elena’s eyes darted frantically around the room. The reality of the trap closed around her like an iron vice. "Victor won't let you get away with this! He owns the judges, he owns the police—"

"Victor Cross was arrested twenty minutes ago at his private airstrip," Clara interrupted, her voice dropping into a chilling whisper. "Julian Thorne sends his regards."

Elena dropped the syringe. It shattered against the cleanroom tile, the clear liquid pooling harmlessly. She collapsed to her knees, sobbing with raw, hysterical panic. "Why are you doing this to me?! Who are you?!"

Clara stopped directly in front of the kneeling woman. She bent down slowly, bringing her face inches from Elena’s tear-stained cheek. In the harsh fluorescent light, Clara let her voice slip back into its original, unmistakable pitch—the soft, trembling tone that Elena had mocked on that marble floor months ago.

"You should have been more careful with that iron, Elena."

Elena’s pupils dilated in pure, paralyzing horror. The breath caught in her throat. "C... Clara?!"
