Chapter 11 - The Fall of Cross Holdings

The arrest of Victor Cross and the dismantling of Vance Enterprises sent shockwaves through the global financial markets. By noon, news crews had completely surrounded the corporate headquarters. Cameras flashed incessantly as federal marshals wheeled out boxes of encrypted drives, ledger books, and personal belongings from the executive offices.
Clara stood on the private observation deck of Thorne Capital, high above the chaos of the financial district. She wore a tailored ivory coat, the wind whipping strands of her dark hair across her face. Beside her, Julian Thorne leaned on his cane, watching the ticker tape running across the outdoor display screen on the opposite skyscraper.
VANCE ENTERPRISES DELISTED. ARTHUR WARD PATENTS TRANSFERRED TO THORNE-WARD FOUNDATION.
"You moved swiftly, Vivian," Julian said, his eyes crinkling with rare, genuine pride. "Arthur would have been proud of your precision. Not a single drop of unnecessary collateral damage."
"It isn't over yet, Julian," Clara murmured, her voice calm but vigilant. "Victor Cross didn't build an empire by operating alone. A man like Victor always keeps an insurance policy."
As if on cue, Clara’s encrypted burner phone buzzed in her pocket.
She retrieved it. The screen displayed a restricted video call request. Clara tapped the screen, holding the phone before her.
The image resolved to show a sterile holding room at the federal detention facility. Sitting across the steel table, his hands cuffed to the welded ring, was Victor Cross. Despite his orange jumpsuit, the middle-aged financier possessed a venomous, unyielding presence. His face was bruised from his arrest, but his eyes burned with ruthless intellect.
"Miss Sterling," Victor spoke, his voice modulated through the prison phone system. "Or should I say... Clara Ward?"
Clara didn't flinch. "Victor."
"I have to admit, you played Elena and Ethan like cheap violins," Victor chuckled darkly, leaning forward against the chain. "I underestimated you. I thought Arthur’s daughter was just another soft-hearted socialite waiting for a savior. But you... you let Julian Thorne rebuild you into a viper."
"I am whatever I needed to be to reclaim what you stole," Clara replied evenly. "Your sister is in custody facing twenty years for attempted murder and corporate sabotage. Your assets are seized. Your shell companies are bankrupt. You have nothing left to negotiate with."
Victor laughed, a dry, rattling sound that sent a cold prickle across Clara’s skin. "Do you really think my sister and I were the only ones who wanted Arthur's compound, Clara?"
Clara’s gaze hardened. "What are you talking about?"
"Project Aether doesn't just treat neurological degeneration," Victor whispered, his smile turning cruel and jagged. "Arthur's research unlocked the genetic sequence for cellular regeneration. Longevity, Clara. The fountain of youth for the men who actually run this country. My investors weren't just hedge fund managers. They are defense contractors, foreign syndicates, and cabinet members."
Julian Thorne stepped closer to the phone, his jaw tightening as he recognized the implication.
"You think you won because you crushed Ethan and arrested my sister?" Victor sneered, tapping the steel table with his cuffed fingers. "You just put a giant target on your own forehead, little girl. The real owners of Aether are already coming for the formula. And unlike Ethan Vance... they don't bother with corporate takeovers. They clean up their messes with blood."
The call abruptly disconnected with a harsh tone.
Clara lowered the phone, turning to Julian. The veteran tycoon was no longer smiling. His face had gone pale, his knuckles white against the head of his cane.

"Julian?" Clara asked, sensing the shift in the air. "Who were his investors?"
Before Julian could answer, the fire alarms inside the Thorne Capital tower began to shriek, and the heavy emergency blast doors to the observation deck slammed shut, trapping them outside.
