Chapter 3 - The Ghost of Clara Ward

The morning news was exactly as Julian Thorne had promised. From the penthouse suite of a private medical clinic on the outskirts of Zurich, Clara watched the muted television screen. Bold red banners crawled across the bottom: TRAGEDY STRIKES VANCE EMPIRE: SOCIALITE WIFE PRESUMED DEAD AFTER APPARENT SUICIDE.
Footage showed Ethan standing before a battery of microphones outside the Vance headquarters. He looked pale, dark circles beneath his eyes, his tailored suit immaculate as always. Beside him stood Elena, dressed in somber black, dabbing at her dry eyes with a lace handkerchief. Ethan spoke with practiced solemnity about mental health struggles and the unbearable pressures of high society, expressing profound grief while subtly reinforcing the narrative that his late wife had been profoundly unwell.
"A masterclass in hypocrisy," a cool voice spoke behind Clara.
Clara turned. Dr. Evelyn Vance—no relation to Ethan, but one of Julian's top aesthetic surgeons—stood holding a tablet. "The facial reconstruction is fully healed, Clara. Your micro-swelling has subsided. Are you ready to see yourself?"
For three months, Clara had lived in sterile isolation, undergoing intensive cosmetic adjustments, voice modulation training, and grueling physical conditioning. They had altered the slope of her nose, deepened the contours of her cheekbones, dyed her hair an obsidian black, and corrected her posture to add an inch of regal, intimidating height.
Clara walked to the mirror and removed the silk robe.
The woman staring back at her was a stranger. Where Clara Ward had been soft-spoken, fair, and approachable, this woman was sharp, striking, and lethal. Her hazel eyes were cold and piercing, framed by dark brows and sculpted bone structure.
"Her name is Vivian Sterling," Julian Thorne said, stepping into the room with his signature ebony cane. "Heiress to the Sterling Logistics fortune, a reclusive investment prodigy who has spent the last decade acquiring distressed assets across Europe."
"And what does Vivian Sterling want with Vance Enterprises?" Clara asked. Her voice was different now—lower, modulated, carrying an innate authority that demanded compliance.
"Vance Enterprises is bleeding," Julian revealed, sliding a financial ledger onto the glass table. "Ethan expanded too fast into the commercial shipping sector. He leveraged his company against your father's stolen patents, believing he could monetize the compound within eighteen months. But the clinical trials are stalling. He needs a seventy-million-dollar cash injection by the third quarter, or his board will remove him."
"Victor Cross won't help him?" Clara questioned, her eyes scanning the balance sheets.
"Victor is a vulture," Julian said with a smirk. "He deliberately orchestrated the liquidity crunch to force Ethan into selling him a controlling interest. Ethan is trapped between bankruptcy and total surrender. Enter Vivian Sterling."
Clara looked back at her new reflection. The phantom sting of Ethan's palm against her cheek had never faded; it had simply hardened into an unbreakable spine of purpose. She remembered the sight of her baby stepson, innocent and terrified, used as a prop in Elena’s vile scheme.
"When do we leave?" she asked.
"Tonight," Julian replied. "Ethan is hosting the annual Vance Foundation Gala at the Grand Plaza Hotel tomorrow evening. It is his desperate attempt to woo foreign investors before the quarter closes. Elena Cross will be officially introduced as the head of the Vance Charitable Trust."
Clara touched the delicate hollow beneath her collarbone where her mother's silver locket used to rest. "She thinks she won the crown."
"Go take it from her," Julian whispered. "Drop by drop. Company by company. Make them beg for the mercy they never gave you."

Twenty-four hours later, the doors of the Grand Plaza ballroom parted.
Clara stepped across the threshold wearing an emerald velvet backless gown, diamonds glittering at her throat, her head held high. Conversations around the room died down in ripples as heads turned toward the striking newcomer. Across the crowded hall, near the champagne fountain, Ethan Vance paused mid-sentence, his wine glass hovering near his lips, his eyes locking onto her with an expression of inexplicable, haunting dread.
