Chapter 6 - Poison in the Well

The Vance estate was quiet that evening, but the silence carried the heavy, suffocating weight of an impending storm. Elena paced the floor of the private nursery, her manicured nails digging into her palms until she drew blood. In the crib, Leo slept soundly, oblivious to the panic unraveling around him.
The nursery door creaked open. Ethan stood in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the hallway light. He had not taken off his coat, and his tie hung loosely around his collar. In his hand, he held a manila folder.
"Ethan," Elena rushed forward, tears already welling in her eyes, falling into her well-rehearsed routine of fragile devotion. "Did you speak to Victor? He said he can counter Vivian Sterling’s offer by midnight. You don't have to surrender to that woman."
Ethan did not move to embrace her. He walked past her, setting the folder on the baby's changing table. "Where did four million dollars go, Elena?"
Elena stopped dead. "I told you, it was an administrative transfer for the international children's fund—"
"The account belongs to a shell corporation registered in Panama," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "The sole beneficiary is Victor Cross. And your signature is on the wire authorization."
"Victor said it was a tax shelter for Leo's trust!" Elena cried, reaching for his arm, but Ethan stepped back, avoiding her touch with cold disgust.
"You lied to me," Ethan whispered. "Just like Clara said."
At the mention of Clara’s name, Elena’s panic morphed into hysterical fury. "Clara?! Clara was weak! She was pathetic! She tried to burn your baby with an iron, remember?! I was the one who protected this house! I gave up my life to take care of you!"
"Did you?" Ethan’s eyes darkened, a seed of doubt that had been planted by Vivian Sterling suddenly sprouting roots in his mind. "Or did you plan that, too?"
"How can you even think that?!" Elena sobbed, covering her face. "I loved you! Victor wanted the company, yes, but everything I did was for us!"
Ethan took a slow breath, closing his eyes. "Pack your bags, Elena."
"What?" Elena gasped, dropping her hands.
"You are stepping down from the board tonight. And you are leaving this house before breakfast," Ethan ordered, his tone devoid of warmth. "Vivian Sterling’s capital cleared an hour ago. She owns forty-five percent of this company now. If I don't remove you, she releases the forensic audit to the federal grand jury. I won't go to prison for you or your brother."
Elena stood motionless as Ethan turned and walked out of the room, shutting the heavy door behind him. The sound of his footsteps faded down the corridor.
Slowly, Elena lowered her head, her sobs cutting off instantly. Her chest stopped heaving. When she looked up into the vanity mirror, her eyes were completely dry, filled with a black, venomous hatred.
She pulled a burner phone from her pocket and dialed.
"Victor," she whispered into the receiver, her voice trembling with malice. "Ethan took the bait. He signed with Sterling. He threw me out."
"Then initiate the secondary contingency," Victor Cross’s deep, distorted voice crackled from the other end. "The compound files are copied. Before you leave tomorrow, trigger the contamination protocol in the lab. If we can't have Vance Enterprises, we will bury Ethan Vance under a mountain of murder charges."
Elena smiled, a grotesque, broken expression. "With pleasure."
Across town, in the penthouse of the Thorne estate, Clara watched the live surveillance feed from the nursery camera on her laptop. She took a slow sip of black coffee, watching Elena pocket the phone.

"She took the bait, Julian," Clara murmured into her headset. "Elena is going after the lab."
Julian's voice chuckled softly through the line. "Then let us give her an audience."
