Chapter 1 - The Shattered Threshold

Julian Vance stood frozen in the foyer, the leather briefcase slipping from his numbed grip. It hit the polished marble with a dull thud. The scene before him defied every expectation of his return: scattered legal documents fluttered across the floor, an overturned wheelchair lay on its side, and sprawled on the dark runner was his wife, Clara. A bead of liquid trickled down her chin, pooling on the carpet in an ominous amber stain.
Beside Clara, Lin, the young maid, was trembling, her hands hovering above Clara’s shoulders as if afraid to touch broken glass. But it was his mother’s face that pulled Julian’s breath from his chest. Eleanor Vance stood rigid in her emerald velvet gown, her knuckles pale around an empty silver chalice. Her eyes, usually calculated and frigid, were wide with unmistakable dread.
""Julian..."" Eleanor gasped, taking an instinctive step back. ""She collapsed. It was an accident.""
""An accident?"" Lin cried, her voice cracking under the suffocating tension. ""Master Julian, she forced her to drink it! She tried to kill her!""
Julian did not wait to hear more. In three strides, he bridged the distance between the foyer and the hallway, dropping heavily to his knees beside Clara. Her skin was freezing, her breathing shallow and ragged. His fingers pressed against her neck, seeking a pulse that fluttered like a dying moth’s wing.
""Clara! Look at me. Stay awake,"" Julian pleaded, his voice losing its customary executive cool. Clara’s hazel eyes fluttered open slightly, glassed over with pain. She looked at him with an agonized mixture of relief and unspoken terror, her lips parting without sound.
""Call emergency services immediately!"" Julian roared over his shoulder, his eyes snapping onto Eleanor like twin daggers. ""Now, mother!""

Eleanor remained paralyzed, her chest heaving beneath the heavy velvet. Slowly, she slipped the silver cup behind her back, her gaze darting toward the open grand entrance behind Julian.
Before Julian could grasp Clara’s shoulders to lift her, Clara’s trembling hand weakly rose, her fingertips grazing the lapel of his tailored jacket. With her last ounce of strength, she pressed a crumpled, torn slip of paper into his palm and whispered a single name that made Julian’s blood run completely cold.
