Chapter 14 - The Reckoning

The boardroom erupted into stunned murmurs as Julian took his place at the opposite end of the table. Clara raised her hand, signaling for silence, and the room instantly obeyed, transfixed by her unexpected appearance.

""Directors of Vance Enterprises,"" Clara spoke, her voice clear, commanding, and utterly devoid of the weakness that had plagued her for months. ""For four months, I was systematically poisoned with antimony and digitalis to prevent the discovery of an embezzling scheme totaling two hundred and forty million dollars.""

She opened the red binder, projecting its digital contents onto the massive presentation screen behind Sterling. Bank routing numbers, shell corporation certificates, and encrypted wire transfers appeared in glaring red and white text.

""Victor Vance did not drown,"" Julian declared, stepping closer to Sterling. ""He was hidden in Panama, funded by offshore accounts managed personally by Arthur Sterling. When Clara discovered the discrepancy, Sterling manipulated my mother into administering what she believed was an incapacitating sedative. But Sterling’s endgame was never to share the power with Eleanor. He intended to wipe out our entire family.""

Sterling’s face turned an ugly, mottled red. He slammed his palms against the mahogany table, standing up. ""This is absurd! These documents are forged! Security, remove these people!""

No security guards moved. The two guards at the door lowered their heads, well aware of the federal badges in the room.

""Last night,"" Clara continued calmly, ""when Sterling realized Julian had exposed the dock operation, he visited the manor. He pushed Eleanor Vance down the stairs to silence her before she could confess to the police, then attempted to pin the murder on Julian.""

""You have no proof of that!"" Sterling roared, sweat breaking out along his hairline. ""It's your word against mine!""

Julian leaned down, placing both hands on the table directly across from Sterling, his eyes piercing through the old man's desperate facade.

""My mother regained consciousness twenty minutes ago at St. Jude’s, Arthur,"" Julian whispered coldly. ""Her first words to the district attorney were your name.""

Sterling's knees buckled. He collapsed back into his executive leather chair, staring blankly as federal agents approached him with open handcuffs.
