POISON IN THE EMERALD HALLS / Chapter 9 / 15

Chapter 9 - The Fracture of Trust

The private medical suite at St. Jude’s smelled of ozone and sterile gauze. Julian sat beside the elevated bed, his fingers intertwined with Clara’s limp, pale hand. Her skin was warm again, color returning slowly to her cheeks, though she remained hooked to a maze of monitors and intravenous drips.

The door clicked open softly, and Dr. Chen entered, reviewing a digital tablet with a furrowed brow.

""How is the baby?"" Julian asked immediately, his voice hoarse from exhaustion.

""The fetus is viable,"" Dr. Chen answered, pulling up a chair across the bed. ""The heavy metals in the compound didn't cross the placental barrier in lethal concentrations thanks to the rapid medical intervention. But Clara’s nervous system took a brutal beating. The partial paralysis in her legs might take months of intensive therapy to reverse. She fought like a lioness, Julian.""

Julian looked down at his wife, guilt gnawing at his ribs like a rabid animal. ""She was enduring this poison for months. Right under my nose. In my own house.""

""Antimony and digitalis poisoning mimics chronic autoimmune neuropathy,"" Chen explained gently. ""Even the best physicians would have missed it without a specific toxicological screen. You cannot blame yourself.""

""I can, and I will,"" Julian murmured.

A faint movement caught his eye. Clara’s eyelashes twitched, and her lips parted with a soft, ragged intake of breath. Julian immediately leaned forward, gently brushing a strand of brown hair from her forehead.

""Clara? Can you hear me?""

Her hazel eyes opened slowly, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lighting before focusing on his face. Tears immediately pooled in the corners of her eyes, slipping silently down her temples into the white pillow.

""Julian..."" her voice was a fragile whisper. ""The baby... is our baby...""

""The baby is safe, Clara,"" Julian choked out, pressing his lips against her cold knuckles. ""You’re both safe. Victor is in federal custody. Henderson is under arrest. It's over.""

Clara’s gaze, however, did not soften with relief. Instead, an expression of profound sorrow and apprehension crossed her features. She weakly pulled her hand away from his grasp, retreating into the bedsheets.

""It isn't over, Julian,"" she whispered, turning her head toward the dark window. ""You don't know the whole truth. Your mother didn't work alone. Someone on your board ordered the hit.""
