Chapter 15 - Ashes and New Dawn

The arrest of Arthur Sterling sent shockwaves through the global financial markets, but Vance Enterprises did not fall. With the fraudulent contracts nullified and the missing funds traced back to seized offshore accounts, the board voted unanimously to confirm Julian as sole executive chairman, with Clara appointed as head of corporate governance and oversight.
Three days later, the Vance Manor felt different. The dark heavy drapes that had kept the hallways gloomy for years had been pulled back, letting the afternoon sunlight bathe the marble floors and classical moldings.
Julian pushed Clara’s wheelchair onto the expansive garden terrace overlooking the private estate. The autumn breeze was crisp, carrying the clean scent of pine and ocean salt.
""Dr. Chen said the physical therapy can begin next week,"" Julian said softly, resting his hands on the handles of her chair. ""He believes you'll be walking on your own before our child is born.""
Clara placed her hand over his, a faint, genuine smile gracing her lips. ""And what about Eleanor?""
Julian sighed, looking out over the sprawling green lawn. ""The doctors say the brain damage from the fall is permanent. She won't stand trial. She will spend the rest of her days in a specialized medical facility upstate. She will never remember what she did... or who we are.""
""Perhaps that is a mercy she didn't deserve,"" Clara murmured, looking down at her abdomen, where the earliest signs of new life were quietly growing. ""We are finally free of them, Julian. Victor, Sterling, Eleanor... the ghosts are all buried.""
Julian walked around the chair, kneeling beside her so their eyes met at level. He brought her hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles with deep, tender reverence.
""No more secrets, Clara,"" he promised. ""No more shadows.""
Clara leaned forward, resting her forehead against his, exhaling the heavy burden of the past months. For the first time in years, the grand estate was completely peaceful.
A servant approached the terrace quietly, clearing his throat with polite hesitation. ""Master Julian? A courier just delivered an unmarked package from Zurich. It was mailed two weeks ago, addressed specifically to Lady Clara.""
Julian stood, taking the small velvet box from the silver tray. He opened it carefully.

Inside, resting on black silk, was an antique silver key accompanied by a handwritten note in Victor’s unmistakable, sharp scrawl:
The real poison was never in the cup. Check the foundation."
