Chapter 7 - The Unseen Puppeteer

Julian did not turn around. The sudden drop in air pressure and the sharp smell of rain confirmed someone had slipped through the side entrance behind him.
""Drop your weapon on the floor, Mr. Vance,"" a gravelly voice instructed from the shadows. Julian recognized the voice immediately. It belonged to Marcus Henderson, the estate’s trusted head of security—the very man he had instructed to protect the surveillance tapes.
Slowly, Julian removed his hand from his coat, unholstered the pistol, and kicked it across the slick concrete floor. Victor stepped forward with a victorious grin, scooping up the gun and inspecting it under the lamp light.
""Good boy,"" Victor mocked, aiming the barrel directly at Julian’s chest. ""You see, Julian, Mother thinks this is all for her grand legacy. She thinks I’m going to take over the family seat tomorrow and restore our old glory. But she’s just an old fool playing with poison.""
""And Henderson?"" Julian asked, maintaining eye contact with his brother without flinching. ""How much did it cost to buy twenty years of family loyalty?""
""A fraction of what the Vance Trust is worth once you and Clara are both gone,"" Henderson said flatly, stepping into the dim light. In his hand, he held the master hard drive containing the mansion’s security footage. ""Your mother will take the fall for Clara’s tragic poisoning. The grief will cause you to commit suicide here at the docks, overcome by despair. And Master Victor will return from the dead, the grieving survivor who inherits the entire empire.""
""It’s an elegant plan, isn’t it?"" Victor smiled, his finger tightening slightly on the trigger. ""A mother driven mad by greed, a broken-hearted husband, and me, rising from the ashes like a phoenix.""
Julian’s face showed no terror. Instead, the corners of his mouth curved upward in a chilling, deliberate smirk.
""You forgot one detail, Victor,"" Julian said quietly.
""Oh? And what’s that?""
""I never trust a traitor twice,"" Julian replied.

From the high metal rafters of the warehouse, a blinding white spotlight suddenly snapped on, bathing Victor and Henderson in dazzling, deafening brilliance. The sharp screech of tactical sirens shattered the night as armed officers in dark tactical gear burst through every loading bay door.
""Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Hands in the air now!""
