Chapter 11 - The Crumbling Foundation

Arthur gripped his mother by the waist and propelled her up the spiral stairs with an intensity fueled by pure terror. Eleanor, despite her fragile years, found an impossible reserve of strength, scrambling up the narrow iron rungs as the mechanical chiming from the vault below grew higher in pitch, a frantic staccato signaling the final seconds of the countdown.

Ten... nine... eight...

Arthur hoisted Eleanor through the open floor hatch into Marcus’s study, lunging out behind her just as the subterranean vault erupted.

The blast didn't shatter the room with open flame; it detonated with a muffled, earth-shattering THUMP that vibrated through the bedrock like an earthquake. The floorboards beneath them buckled violently, the parquet tiles splintering into hundreds of wooden daggers. The heavy stone walls of the mansion groaned, a terrifying sound of centuries-old mortar turning to dust. A massive column of black smoke, sulfur, and pulverized limestone blasted up through the open hatch, knocking Arthur and Eleanor across the room.

"Julian!" Eleanor wept, clutching the carpet as plaster rained down from the ceiling in massive chunks.

"He's gone, Mother! We have to move!" Arthur yelled, coughing through the thick, acrid smoke.

The structural integrity of the west wing was failing. The explosion had severed the foundation pillars supporting the grand library and the portrait gallery directly above the old wine cellars. A terrifying screech of tearing iron echoed from beneath the floorboards. The floor around the open vault hatch collapsed inward, swallowing Marcus's massive mahogany desk into a subterranean abyss of smoke and rubble.

Arthur pulled Eleanor to her feet, half-carrying her as they staggered out of the crumbling study into the second-floor hallway. "Lily!" Arthur screamed, his voice raw from smoke and panic. "LILY!"

He reached the linen press where he had hidden her. The door was wedged shut by the shifting doorframe. Arthur threw his entire weight against the oak paneling once, twice, three times until the latch snapped.

Lily tumbled out into his arms, crying hysterically, clutching her little flashlight like a lifeline. "Daddy! The house is shaking! The monsters are under the floor!"

"I've got you, sweetheart! I've got you!" Arthur scooped her into his right arm while keeping his left arm locked around his mother's trembling shoulders.

Behind them, the portrait gallery collapsed with a deafening roar, plunging the entire rear wing into the cellar below in a storm of dust and debris. The staircase leading to the grand foyer was their only escape, but as they reached the balcony overlooking the foyer, Arthur stopped dead.

The front doors of the estate, solid oak reinforced with iron bands, were completely engulfed in flames. Someone had poured accelerant across the grand foyer before entering the house. Claire hadn't come alone—her associates had ensured there would be no survivors.

Trapped on the second-floor landing between a collapsing foundation and a wall of roaring fire, Arthur looked down at his daughter's tear-streaked face.

Then, through the roar of the flames, the distinct sound of heavy glass shattering came from the conservatory wing.
